Have you ever come across a film so captivating that if you stumble upon it while flipping through channels, regardless of the scene playing, you’d be compelled to stop and watch it right up until the end? Such films are often referred to as those that make you forget about the remote control. These types of movies, typically comedies, are known for their ability to grab your attention instantly, much like how Christopher Nolan has described some of Will Ferrell’s best comedies. At times, they can be mindless action films filled with explosions, adrenaline, and pure entertainment that allow us to unwind and simply enjoy the ride.
Initially, “Den of Thieves” was considered a must-watch film for many viewers when it aired on cable. Despite garnering mixed reviews from critics and having a modest box office run, this heist thriller starring Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. managed to capture the hearts of audiences eventually. In fact, The Rewatchables even deemed it as one of their favorites, which helped boost the movie’s popularity via their podcast. This recognition paid off when “Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera” was released recently, as it topped the box office charts, despite not receiving universal acclaim from our own Eric Eisenberg.
A new “drop the remote” movie might have been born.
During a chat about Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, I inquired from Gerard Butler if there were any films, similar to London Has Fallen, that would captivate him so much that he’d abandon his remote and watch until the end. He provided an excellent response. Butler stated:
Whenever an action flick grabs me like that, it’s nothing short of exhilarating! And let me tell you, when it comes to films that leave a lasting impression, nothing quite compares to Die Hard for me. It was just… extraordinary! Thrilling, engaging, and unforgettable. And with six thousand more action movies out there, I’m always on the lookout for that next adrenaline rush! (Laughs)
Gerard Butler speaks the truth without a doubt. Whether it’s “300” or “Greenland,” the actor boasts an impressive collection of action films under his belt. However, he smartly acknowledged Bruce Willis’ best action movie masterpiece – none other than the original “Die Hard.” Regardless of whether it’s Christmas or any other time of year, we’re always eager to watch John McClane (Willis) meticulously navigating through a skyscraper teeming with terrorists. The influence of “Die Hard” on Samuel L. Jackson’s career is undeniable, as he stated that “Die Hard with a Vengeance” had a more significant impact than “Pulp Fiction.” “Die Hard” is indeed massive, global, and simply unforgettable – it’s Die Hard!
One aspect of the film “Drop the Remote” often revolves around spawning a series, and Gerard Butler expresses his wish for this pattern to continue with “Den of Thieves”. Regrettably, the sequel didn’t achieve blockbuster success. However, should they proceed with a third installment, Butler and his co-star, O’Shea Jackson Jr., have already thought about potential cast members. Unfortunately, Bruce Willis is no longer available due to retirement. Nonetheless, the tenacity of John McClane will continue to influence every decision regarding the “Den of Thieves” series as long as Gerard Butler remains at the helm.
