Warning: This discussion may reveal plot details from the 11th episodes of Season 13 for “Chicago Fire”, Season 10 for “Chicago Med”, and Season 12 for “Chicago P.D.” Proceed with caution if you haven’t watched these episodes yet.
In the “One Chicago” universe, a deliberate blast in an underground data center triggers a chain reaction – a building explosion followed by a partial subway collapse that stalls a city subway train. This catastrophe leads to an enormous crossover event, merging all aspects of the “One Chicago” world. The incident nearly claims the lives of numerous law enforcement personnel, among them Adam Ruzek (Patrick Flueger). After helping Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and the train’s passengers escape being squashed, Ruzek narrowly avoids meeting another perilous end.
Throughout the episode, Ruzek persistently pursued a suspect he forced onto a train carriage after the collapsing government building. This man fatally shot Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) three times during his escape, causing her to face two near-death experiences in the hospital. Due to a similar physical profile, Ruzek apprehended the wrong individual. When he and Kidd eventually found the correct suspect, he had to rescue him from a hostage situation – just before leaving the subway tunnel, he noticed a hard drive with valuable data had fallen when he shot the perpetrator. Bending down to pick it up, debris fell from above, striking his left arm. However, the climactic scene felt more like a cliché instead of being truly exciting.
Adam’s brush with death is less than scary
In the climactic moment of Adam Ruzek’s adventure, boulders serve as the final shocking event in an action-packed episode. Regrettably, these boulders appear conspicuously artificial to the eye. Moreover, his response seems overly dramatic, with a mere grunt and “son of a b” as he encounters the rolling rocks that barely seem to touch the ground.
The incident doesn’t seem to influence the storyline; Ruzek only receives a minor scratch from the boulder and there’s no indication that he might have suffered a more severe injury like a broken bone, despite him and Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) being shown entering an ambulance. Interestingly, he manages to retrieve the hard drive without much difficulty, notifying a previous employee of the data farm that the hard drive is now considered as impounded evidence.
In summary, it was disappointing and underwhelming – a far cry from the thrilling events that preceded it. It’s unfortunate because Ruzek’s collaboration with Stella Kidd is some of the most compelling content in the series. Fingers crossed, he recovers quickly for his Season 12 wedding with Burgess.
