At present, we’re experiencing an age dominated by sequels, remakes, and revivals, and Johnny Depp hasn’t managed to escape this trend. Over the last few years, there’s been talk about Depp being involved in the upcoming “Pirates of the Caribbean 6,” but as things stand now, it appears that project is still uncertain. Given how frequently sequels are produced these days, I must admit I was taken aback to learn that one of Depp’s iconic films is getting a sequel. What makes this even more surprising is that this follow-up is happening in a manner I wouldn’t have anticipated.
One Of Johnny Depp And Tim Burton’s Films Is Receiving A Sequel
In the past, Johnny Depp collaborated with Tim Burton for the movie “Sleepy Hollow,” which was released in 1999 and was an adaptation of Washington Irving’s short story, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” While this film might not rank among Burton’s most celebrated works or showcase one of Depp’s top performances, it has built a dedicated fanbase. Interestingly, a sequel to the movie is in development. According to Entertainment Weekly, the upcoming comic book titled “Return to Sleepy Hollow” is being written by Casey Gilly, with Savanna Mayer handling the artwork for IDW Publishing’s horror imprint, IDW Dark.
In Sleepy Hollow, we follow the story of Ichabod Crane (Depp), a law enforcement officer who is called to the mysterious town to solve a series of gruesome beheadings. There, Crane uncovers the spectral entity known as the Headless Horseman and finds himself pursued by Katrina Van Tassel’s (Christina Ricci) affectionate advances. The upcoming comic-inspired sequel will find Ichabod revisiting Sleepy Hollow 15 years later to investigate additional murders and reconnect with Katrina, whom he’s been apart from. Casey Gilly shared his feelings about getting the role in these words:
Occasionally, an opportunity lands in my inbox that ignites a primal need within me to write it. Sleepy Hollow is one such chance, and upon laying eyes on Savanna’s stunning artwork, I felt an immediate connection. Ever since I was young, I’ve been captivated by spiritualism, Victorian-era funeral rites, and folklore, so the opportunity to weave these elements into the Sleepy Hollow universe has been nothing short of exhilarating. The process of crafting scripts for Savanna and witnessing their ethereal, sophisticated, and hauntingly beautiful art breathe life into the book has been a joyful experience. They are undeniably a rising talent that is worth keeping an eye on.
I’ve never expected “Sleepy Hollow” to show up as a potential Tim Burton sequel, given its status as an established movie. What’s more surprising is that this new installment in the horror franchise is set to be released as a comic book series, which has been used for other films before, such as “Batman ’89,” which continues the continuity of Burton’s superhero movies. Neither Tim Burton nor Johnny Depp appear to be involved with the new movie titled “Return.” However, Depp does have another project lined up.
Johnny Depp Is Launching A Comic Book Property Of His Own
In the continuation of his 90’s dark fantasy movie, Johnny Depp is collaborating with director Ridley Scott to create a fresh intellectual property (IP). Previously, they teamed up for the “Hyde” graphic novel series, inspired by “Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde”, set to be published this Halloween. The narrative revolves around Mr. Hyde, who has completely suppressed Dr. Jekyll, now living in the sewers as he tries to transform others into Hydes. Although the character resembles Depp, he has been secretive about a live-action portrayal of the story.

Johnny Depp has no qualms about using a strong, four-letter word when reflecting on the loss of his role in Fantastic Beasts.
The previously mentioned graphic novel will be co-owned by Ridley Scott, who starred in Fantastic Beasts, and the production company Johnny Cake. This recent business decision marks a continued progression in Scott’s professional journey (rather than referring to it as a “comeback”). Despite his past legal disputes with Amber Heard, Scott is re-establishing himself within the industry. Notably, he is making a significant return to Hollywood with Day Drinker, his first film from a U.S. studio in quite some time.
It’s intriguing to ponder if the “Sleepy Hollow” comic might lead to a live-action adaptation if it generates hype. Under ideal circumstances, that would be another notable addition to Johnny Depp’s career portfolio. In practical terms, the likelihood of this happening is likely slim, but remember, the prospect of Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow sequel seemed remote too. “Return to Sleepy Hollow” is set for release on October 29, and fans eager to get ready can currently stream the original movie for free on Pluto TV.
