A Closer Look at Gagà Laboratorio’s Labormatic Watches

As a seasoned watch enthusiast with a penchant for all things Italian, I find myself utterly captivated by the new offering from Gagà Laboratorio. Having spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of horology, I can confidently say that this latest venture by Ruben Tomella is nothing short of extraordinary.

As an ardent admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the captivating Italian watch brand, GaGà Milano, is renowned for creating unconventional timepieces that echo the Dandy spirit and lifestyle. Excitingly, they are now unveiling a new chapter in their horological journey under the name Gagà Laboratorio. This fresh venture signifies another inspiring step by founder Ruben Tomella in the realm of independent watchmaking. While GaGà Milano’s watches are known for their eccentric designs reminiscent of pocket watches, Gagà Laboratorio seeks to captivate a wider audience with luxurious, refined, and high-end timepieces.

Under the unveiling of the Gagà Laboratorio label, the brand introduced their Labormatic model watch. This timepiece shares similarities with the Manuale from GaGà Milano but boasts a sleeker, smoother, and more rounded silhouette. As per Mo Coppoletta, the art director for these new watches, he collaborated with Tomella on the Labormatic’s design. “I envisioned the Labormatic’s design within a modern post-war setting, drawing inspiration from the groundbreaking spirit and dynamic energy of 1950s and 60s Italy, specifically in the industrious northern cities,” Coppoletta elaborated.

Two unique color schemes are available, the Cinquanta and Bauhaus, each featuring a distinct design for subtle details. The Cinquanta exudes a vibrant ’50s atmosphere, boasting a sage green dial reminiscent of classic Vespa motorcycles cruising the streets of Milan. On the other hand, Bauhaus draws inspiration from the famous art movement, presenting a sleek black and gunmetal palette that embodies industrial sophistication. Both designs share the same structural design, with colors, finishes, and material traits derived from their respective inspirational eras, resulting in something modern yet infused with historical references.

This watch is divided into seven sections and has a case that’s 42mm in diameter and 13.3mm thick. The word “labor” in Latin signifies hard work, determination, and initiative – qualities reflected in the watch’s LJP-G1000 movement, which can be observed through a sapphire back cover. The hour is displayed via a window at 12 o’clock, while the minutes are shown on the central disc of the dial. Just like GaGà Milano’s other designs, these new Labormatic models feature a steel cabochon crown positioned at 12 o’clock and come equipped with handcrafted saffiano leather straps.

Gagà Laboratorio’s Labormatic watch retails at approximately $4,604 USD and can be purchased from the brand’s authorized dealers. Carefully examine the timepieces showcased in the gallery above for a better understanding of its design. For further details, please check out Gagà Laboratorio’s official website.
