As a gamer with a rich history of watching and competing in game shows, I can’t help but appreciate the long-standing rivalry between Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! Both have stood the test of time, each with their unique charm and challenges that keep us coming back for more.
It’s interesting to note that Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! share numerous commonalities. Both are renowned as some of the greatest game shows ever made, each having been aired for over four decades (as per the 2024 TV schedule), and both have new hosts who are following in the footsteps of legendary predecessors. The proximity of their studios and shared crew has fostered a playful competition between these shows, a fact that one Jeopardy! contestant, Sam Nguyen, discovered when he made a significant error during his audition for Wheel of Fortune in 2018.
On December 11, Sam Nguyen featured as a contestant on America’s beloved quiz program. During the interview segment, he shared that this wasn’t his initial game show appearance. When Ken Jennings asked about his time on ‘Wheel of Fortune’, the Maryland tax accountant amusingly reminisced:
Approximately six years ago, I auditioned for Wheel of Fortune, but unfortunately, I revealed my preference for Jeopardy! in a crowd of ardent Wheel of Fortune fans. Needless to say, that didn’t sit well with the audience.
Whoa, it seems like Sam Nguyen slipped up pretty badly there! Thankfully, it didn’t jeopardize his chances with the Wheel of Fortune team; he eventually received a callback and graced our screens on January 9, 2019. The contestant attributes his success on both shows to a bit of manifestation, stating: “I simply wished for this opportunity, and here I am!
One of the coordinators for contestants inquired if I had ever appeared on Jeopardy!, to which I responded, ‘No, but once I’m on Wheel of Fortune, I plan to audition for Jeopardy! afterwards.’ My friend often advises me to speak optimistically about the desired results.
Apart from regaining his momentum on “Wheel of Fortune” through confident dialogue suggesting an impending invitation, he also hinted at aiming for “Jeopardy!” in the future. Such ambition certainly showcases his confidence and determination.
In 2019, Sam Nguyen graced the stage on “Wheel”, sharing it with the highly esteemed game show host Pat Sajak. It wasn’t until Season 42 that Ryan Seacrest stepped in as the current host. Ken Jennings, however, has a longer history with the role. Known for his impressive victories on “Jeopardy!” and holding the record for most consecutive games won, Jennings was the initial guest host to fill the shoes of Alex Trebek following his passing in November 2020. Eventually, he was officially chosen as the successor and the one true host.
Ryan Seacrest and Ken Jennings have been warmly accepted by their enthusiastic followers, yet social media users are quick to criticize either host whenever they perceive a mistake. Some fans of “Jeopardy!” have confessed that the show lacks the same feel during the Ken Jennings era without Alex Trebek.
It’s only natural to be loyal to your preferred TV host or game show. However, Sam Nguyen would remind us to consider the audience we’re expressing our opinions to. To find out when these syndicated game shows air in your region, check your local television listings.
