The world of “Game of Thrones” is growing even more, as George R.R. Martin recently shared significant news about the franchise’s upcoming shows. Apart from Season 3 of “House of the Dragon” and other new spin-offs being developed, HBO is also working on a series called “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” This series is based on one of Martin’s shorter stories that takes place in Westeros. The first season of this new show, featuring Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (also known as Dunk), is expected to air later this year. HBO seems to have high hopes for the longevity of this latest series.
During an interview with Collider, George R.R. Martin spent more time away from writing “The Winds of Winter” to discuss “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” He said, “I’ve watched the first season of Dunk and Egg, and it’s fantastic.” The upcoming series is set approximately 90 years prior to “Game of Thrones,” focusing on the adventures of characters Dunk and his squire, Egg, as they traverse Westeros. Season 1 has already been completed and is anticipated to air later this year.
George R.R. Martin hinted during the conversation that HBO is confident that “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” will be successful, since they are currently producing a second season. However, it should be noted that HBO has not yet officially announced Season 2 of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” so Martin’s disclosure represents exciting news for fans.
Dunk and Egg Is a “Softer” ‘Game of Thrones’ Story
In essence, although A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms appears to tell a standalone story, it is closely linked to the broader narrative of Game of Thrones. This connection revolves around an unanticipated link to the Targaryen dynasty, which propels the characters to significant roles within the Seven Kingdoms. George R.R. Martin has hinted at elements that fans yet to read the books can look forward to in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and he emphasized that it deviates from the usual format of the Game of Thrones series. In his own words:
I found these two characters particularly meaningful to me, and they are quite unconventional. They differ from the typical characters you’d find in a fantasy tale. The storyline has a softer, more comedic edge to it. I trust the audience will be receptive to such an innovative twist.
Joining Peter Claffey in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is an ensemble cast that includes Dexter Sol Ansell, Finn Bennett, Henry Ashton, Daniel Ings, Sam Spruell, and Tanzyn Crawford. The upcoming series is being supervised by Ira Parker, who previously held an executive producer role during the premiere season of House of the Dragon. Although a full trailer for the new show has yet to be unveiled, fans have caught glimpses of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in a broader HBO promotional video.
Regarding “House of the Dragon”, they are actively preparing for Season 3, but a specific start date has not been disclosed yet. As of now, there is no set release date for Season 3.
