Beloved cult classic 3D platformer Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is making an unexpected comeback.
The game will get a remastered version, as revealed by Argonaut Games. Originally released in 1997, this new version of Legend of the Gobbos will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC (via GOG) this April 2. Physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Switch are also on the way, with pre-orders available now through Rock It Games and a release planned for Q2 2025.
Jez San, founder of Argonaut Games, expressed excitement about bringing the fan-favorite title to modern audiences. “Our team has worked tirelessly to preserve the charm and nostalgia of the original game while introducing modern enhancements,” San said in a press release. “We can’t wait for players to dive into Croc’s world and experience the magic again.”
First released in 1997 for the original PlayStation, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos became a beloved hit with its colorful world and charming anthropomorphic protagonist. In the game, players control Croc, a spunky little crocodile that embarks on a quest to save his adopted Gobbo family from the evil Baron Dante and his minions. The game initially received decent reviews as it was compared to other 3D platformers and mascots from that period, such as Super Mario 64 and Sonic the Hedgehog.
The developers have promised that the Croc remaster will remain as faithful as they can to the original title. They’ll still be offering a host of modern upgrades. Some of those are enhanced high-definition graphics, updated controls with a smoother camera, and retro visual modes to relive 90s magic.
Should you be new to it, the game consists of 45 stages spread over five distinct realms, ranging from frigid caves to expansive, fiery volcanic landscapes.
Finally, superfans and gaming historians will have the option to enjoy “The Crocipedia.” It’s a digital museum featuring concept art, animation tests, original design documents, and exclusive interviews with the game’s creators.
If you want to experience a bit of history from the timeframe in which games were transitioning to 3D environments, then checking out the Croc: Legend of the Gobbos remaster might be worth it.
