A New Mummy Movie Is Coming, But I Really Need Brendan Fraser To Return

As a movie critic who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s, I can’t help but reminisce about the glory days of The Mummy franchise with Brendan Fraser at the helm. I still remember the thrill of watching him navigate ancient tombs and battling mummies with an infectious charm that made every adventure feel fresh.

In terms of forthcoming horror flicks, we’re in for a treat as many iconic monster characters from previous films are making a comeback. For instance, “Nosferatu” is scheduled to be released this Christmas, and Universal Studios has a new “Wolf Man” movie lined up. Moreover, it has been announced that another “Mummy” film will hit the screens in 2026, which has sparked thoughts of the beloved Brendan Fraser movies in me.

Blumhouse Is Making A New The Mummy Movie

Lee Cronin, the mind behind the 2023 film “Evil Dead Rise”, is now spearheading the upcoming “Mummy” movie, as announced by Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, who are producing it. The movie will hit theaters on April 17, 2026, and Cronin shared his thoughts on the project:

In a departure from any Mummy film you’ve seen prior, I’m delving into the depths of the earth to bring forth something incredibly old and terrifyingly ominous.

Cronin is penning the script for the new Mummy movie, as well as directing. He’ll have James Wan of The Conjuring movies and Jason Blum on his side as producers, along with his Evil Dead Rise producer John Keville. Other than that, we just have this Instagram teaser:

It seems fairly clear that the upcoming “Mummy” film will lean heavily into the horror genre. Despite the fact that this franchise predates the charismatic performance of Brendan Fraser in the 1999 movie, it’s the sequel in this series that I’m most eager to see.

I Think The Next Great Mummy Movie Needs Brendan Fraser

The Mummy series of films date back quite a bit, starting with the 1932 version starring Boris Karloff and extending to the 1959 iteration featuring Christopher Lee. Besides the original Mummy trilogy, there’s also the disappointing 2017 remake featuring Tom Cruise, which was intended to establish the Dark Universe. Even though I understand Hollywood’s desire to revisit this property, I’d much rather see Brendan Fraser returning as Rick O’Connell, enjoying himself in some ancient tomb, rather than watching yet another generic Egyptian mummy horror movie… once more.

For quite some time now, Brendan Fraser has expressed his desire to reprise his role in another film from the Mummy series, and as enthusiastic fans, we’ve been eagerly waiting for a fourth installment. Here are his recent thoughts on potentially appearing in a 2023 sequel for The Mummy:

I’m not against it: I can see myself being on board with it.

Indeed, at that moment, Fraser appeared to be expressing an opinion from someone who had likely fielded this question multiple times without ever seeing a script to support it. The 2017 reboot certainly demonstrated some missteps when it came to handling the franchise, as the original director of the 1999 film expressed his disappointment and even insult at the remake. As for Blumhouse Productions, their recent track record in horror has been a bit inconsistent, so while they might strike it rich, I personally have my preferences regarding this franchise.

It seems to me that if Hollywood acknowledges that Brendan Fraser is what made The Mummy a legend, they could potentially revive the franchise with another hit. However, it’s also possible that Lee Cronin’s version turns out to be fantastic! We’ll keep you informed about any updates right here on TopMob.
