A Planned Disney World Attraction Has Been Delayed into 2025, But That May Be Good News For Muppets Fans

As a seasoned Disney enthusiast with over two decades of park visits under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and curiosity about the latest developments at Walt Disney World. The delay in the opening of The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure has left many fans like me scratching our heads. However, upon further reflection, I find myself intrigued by the possibility that this setback could pave the way for bigger changes, especially in the Animation Courtyard.

When you’re standing in line for new shows at Walt Disney World, nobody enjoys hearing about setbacks. However, in this instance, they could potentially be positive news. One show that has been closed at Disney World since the global pandemic, The Little Mermaid stage show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, was planned to receive a revamped and modernized version this year. Regrettably, those anticipating The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure will now have to wait until 2025 instead.

This week, Disney disclosed that the initial launch slated towards the end of 2024 is being moved to summer 2025 instead. This substantial postponement concerns a live stage production. As per Disney’s statement, construction on the building exterior, including a fresh marquee, will commence shortly. However, it raises questions whether this delay in the new show and other upcoming projects for Disney’s Hollywood Studios might be interconnected.

The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure Delay Could Mean Big Changes For The Animation Courtyard

Originally scheduled to debut around this time, “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” has unexpectedly been postponed. This announcement suggests that the cause for the delay may have been a sudden, unforeseen problem that recently arose.

Additionally, the delay in filing the necessary paperwork for constructing a new marquee at the theater suggests that the upcoming project might deviate from the original plans intended for the attraction, as it seems unusual that these documents were not prepared earlier.

If this is true, it might imply that further modifications are on the horizon for the Animation Courtyard. This area, along with another spot at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, are strong candidates for the upcoming Monsters Inc. land, which has been officially announced for the park. In case Monstropolis moves into the Animation Courtyard, it could potentially mean a reprieve for Muppet Vision 3D, a beloved attraction.

MuppetVision 3D May Have Been Spared, At Least For Now

As a gaming enthusiast who’s often found myself in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, I can tell you that Grand Avenue, also known affectionately as the Muppet Courtyard, is my current hangout spot. Here, you’ll find the iconic Muppet Vision 3D, one of the last projects overseen by the legendary Jim Henson himself, and Pizzarizzo, a dining location that’s strangely captivating to many visitors like me. Rumors are swirling about this place, suggesting it could be the site for Monsters Inc.’s new land, as announced at D23 this year. However, Disney hasn’t officially confirmed this yet.

Despite some speculation about replacing Muppet Vision 3D due to popular demand for The Muppets, there’s been a strong reaction against this change. It seems that Disney might be rethinking their plans, as the outcry has led them to consider placing the new attraction in the Animation Courtyard instead.

Essentially, the reason for the postponement of The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure is that the initial plans have been altered. In order to fit both the upcoming show and the Monsters Inc. area within Animation Courtyard, some extra construction on the Mermaid building is required.

Currently, it’s just guesswork as to when construction will start on Monsters Inc. land. Disney World has numerous construction projects scheduled for 2025, with work at Disney’s Animal Kingdom already slated for January and a significant renovation of Frontierland at Magic Kingdom also on the horizon. If we do eventually say goodbye to Muppet Vision 3D, that day might be quite some time off yet.
