As a seasoned moviegoer with a soft spot for quirky pop culture trends, I must say that this year’s theatrical extravaganza has been nothing short of intriguing! The rise of the popcorn bucket phenomenon is undeniably one of the most unexpected yet fascinating developments in the film industry.
2023 has been a prosperous year for the cinema industry, and it appears this trend will continue as we move towards 2024. This success isn’t solely due to the triumphs of prominent films, but also because of the unexpected popularity of popcorn buckets. Once a lesser-known item, these special plastic popcorn containers now accompany movies in theaters and have gained significant attention this year. Surprisingly, fans are finding creative ways to combine these buckets into intriguing arrangements.
2021 saw the creation of some standout popcorn containers, particularly the controversial Dune bucket, modeled after a sandworm’s gaping mouth. In a chat with Slate, two key figures behind this design revealed that fans are pairing the Dune bucket with the latest Alien: Romulus release, in a more mature style. As Marcus Gonzalez, Global Creative Director at Zinc Group, explained…
As a gamer, I can’t help but get excited about merging the iconic Dune helmet with the terrifying Xenomorph we recently unveiled for Alien Romulus. It’s just mind-boggling to imagine slipping the back of my head into the gaping maw of that creature – it’s like a surreal, sci-fi dream sequence where I’m left wondering, “Who on earth thought this up and said, ‘Hey…’
As a fan myself, I must admit I was taken aback by the unusual observations circulating about the iconic buckets from ‘Dune’ and ‘Alien: Romulus’. Interestingly, numerous videos have garnered attention on TikTok and YouTube, where people are drawing attention to the fact that the ‘Dune’ bucket looks more like a large hole, while the ‘Alien: Romulus’ bucket, with its Xenomorph head design, seems to possess a rather suggestive shape. It might not be the most complex of interpretations, but here’s an example of what some folks are suggesting.

Moving on from the unexpectedly suggestive Dune popcorn container that even made it onto Saturday Night Live, to the deliberately explicit open-mouthed Wolverine bucket for Deadpool & Wolverine, these containers are not just grabbing attention, they’re boosting sales.
Prior to working for Zinc Group on their popcorn buckets, Gonzalez had experience creating those same containers while employed by Disney theme parks. Disneyland and Disney World’s popcorn buckets are highly sought after as collectibles among fans, leading to long lines and even resales on eBay. It seems that a similar trend is emerging with movie theater popcorn buckets, as they too become popular items following their sell-out at local theaters.
It seems unlikely that popcorn bucket craze will exit movie theaters in the near future. Instead, major film releases are likely to continue incorporating them as a promotional tool. Should they become viral once more, regardless of the reason, it would benefit everyone connected with the movies.
