As a seasoned Disney enthusiast who’s flown through the skies countless times on Soarin’, I can confidently say that the latest update at Epcot has made my heart soar with joy! The distorted Eiffel Tower, a source of amusement and annoyance for many years, is now a thing of the past. The new version of Soarin’ Around the World offers a more immersive experience, making it even harder to choose between Disneyland and Walt Disney World (though I’d still pick Disneyland any day!).
Being a frequent guest at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World, I’ve developed my own list of must-ride attractions, with Soarin’ always making the cut. This flying theater adventure never fails to make me feel like I’m truly soaring through the skies. I’ve always leaned towards the original Soarin’ Over California, but the current Soarin’ Around the World has a technical issue that’s been driving me up the wall.
In one of the memorable sights on Soarin Around the World, you find yourself gazing at the Eiffel Tower. Regrettably, due to its immense height and straight structure, the screen utilized isn’t entirely flat, and the camera takes a very close-up shot. As a result, the tower becomes comically distorted, especially for those seated slightly off-center; it seems to bend! However, rest assured that as of today, this amusing yet vexing issue has been resolved at Epcot.
Soarin’ Around The World Has Been Updated At Epcot
Today, an unexpected upgrade for Soarin’ Around the World was introduced at its Epcot location. The alteration was primarily to refresh the closing scene, as this part of the film simulates a flight that concludes over Epcot itself. However, Epcot has undergone significant changes in the last eight years compared to when the attraction first debuted, so the updated version reflects these transformations.
The revised final scene depicts the current Epcot, featuring the World Celebration area instead of Future World. Given Epcot’s extensive five-year renovation, the front of the park has undergone significant changes, making the old version less representative of what it is today. While viewing the old Epcot during Soarin’ may evoke nostalgia, Disney probably intends to present a more updated and accurate depiction.
During the film’s update by Imagineering, they not only enhanced the ending but also significantly improved user experience by rectifying the Eiffel Tower scene. Previously, the camera was positioned closely and at an upward angle on the tower, leading to distortion. In the revised version, the camera approaches the tower from a distance and with a downward perspective, thus eliminating this issue.
Bring The New Soarin To Disneyland Now Please
It seems that all we’re missing is an update to the Disneyland edition of Soarin’. Maybe it wasn’t necessary to invest time and resources into altering only this section of the movie for Disneyland. The finale of Soarin’ at Disney California Adventure, however, features Disneyland’s Main Street U.S.A. and Sleeping Beauty Castle, scenes that are least likely to be modified in the future due to their iconic status.
With the initial task completed, it appears that incorporating the latest Eiffel Tower section into the DCA variant of Soarin’ would require minimal additional effort. The current visual distortion, which detracts from the overall grandeur of the attraction, is undesirable and should be rectified promptly.
Some attractions have attempted to replicate the charm of Soarin’, but none quite measure up. Soarin’ stands out as one of the top attractions at Disney California Adventure, and I believe the version available at Disneyland Resort surpasses that at Walt Disney World due to its unique location. If they were to bring back Soarin’ Over California permanently at Disney California Adventure, I wouldn’t object – it would be just as delightful!
