As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for unique and innovative content, I must admit that Grand Theft Hamlet piqued my curiosity from the get-go. As a gamer here, let me tell you, this movie isn’t your typical Shakespearean drama. It’s more like a modern twist on Hamlet, set in the gritty world of Grand Theft Auto (GTA). Instead of princes and queens, we follow two out-of-work actors trying to bring Hamlet to life during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their production isn’t happening in an Elizabethan theater, but rather within the virtual streets of GTA, making it a unique blend of art and video game reality.
In this movie, there are no actual actors on screen; instead, all the action you’ll witness is simulated within the game world. Admittedly, it might sound peculiar at first, but my curiosity about seeing the film remains undiminished.
This format certainly offers a fresh approach that could be expanded upon more extensively. In fact, the idea of creating shows from video games isn’t completely novel – take Red vs Blue, for instance, which was filmed using multiple Halo games and had an impressive run of 18 seasons.
There is no premiere date set in stone for Grand Theft Hamlet, but be sure to keep an eye on Mubi’s social media so you don’t miss out when it launches on their streaming platform.
