As a seasoned viewer of historical dramas and political thrillers, I am absolutely thrilled about Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming series, “A Very Royal Scandal.” The ensemble cast, led by Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson, promises to deliver an engaging narrative that sheds light on one of the most intriguing moments in recent history – the infamous interview between Prince Andrew and Emily Maitlis.
Amazon Prime Video unveiled initial photos featuring Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson in “A Very Royal Scandal,” a show depicting the BBC’s controversial interview with Prince Andrew regarding Jeffrey Epstein, as its first installment.
Freshly published images depict Sheen (known for roles in ‘Good Omens’, ‘Prodigal Son’, and ‘Masters of Sex’) as a member of the British royal family, while Wilson (‘Luther’, ‘The Affair’, and ‘Jane Eyre’) is portrayed as a prominent journalist named Emily Maitlis. These images underscore journalism’s impact by showcasing a significant scandal that many believe tarnished the monarchy’s already questionable reputation even further.
“Under one night, within an hour, a single interview created worldwide ripples,” is a description of the plot. This three-part series is inspired by the actual 2019 conversation between Maitlis and Prince Andrew, which centered around the serious allegations he faced concerning his connection to Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender, and Virginia Giuffre’s claims that she had inappropriate relations with the royal while underage.
Debuting only on Amazon Prime Video across the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand on September 19th, “A Very Royal Scandal” delves into the events involving Maitlis and Prince Andrew before, during, and after their interview. It covers the interview itself, as well as the subsequent fallout that would shape their lives irrevocably, leaving behind a series of unanswered questions.
The series also includes Joanna Scanlan (known for “After Love” and “Notes on a Scandal”), Alex Jennings (“Your Christmas or Mine?”), Éanna Hardwicke (“The Sixth Commandment”), and Claire Rushbrook (“Secrets & Lies”) as its stars. Amanda Thirsk is played by Joanna Scanlan, Sir Edward Young by Alex Jennings, Stewart Maclean by Éanna Hardwicke, and Sarah Ferguson by Claire Rushbrook.
The show, titled “Julian Jarrold’s direction and Jeremy Brock’s writing,” was brought to life by Blueprint Television, specifically for Amazon MGM Studios. This production is now available globally through Sony Pictures Television.
Karen Thrussell, Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin, Diarmuid McKeown, Jeremy Brock, Jarrold, and Maitlis are all involved as executive producers in this series. Meanwhile, Josh Hyams takes on the role of producer within the show.
