On a Wednesday announcement, the key player in production and distribution revealed that it was bolstering its U.K. staff with the addition of Laura Lankester and Will Johnston. They will now collaborate with former BBC executives Piers Wenger and Rose Garnett.

Lankester and Johnston are stepping down from their positions as joint CEOs at Lookout Point to collaborate with Wenger and Garnett on increasing, defining, and developing A24’s worldwide TV series lineup, as stated by A24.

This duo has collaborated with writer Sally Wainwright on a number of critically-acclaimed British TV shows from the past ten years, such as “Happy Valley”, “Gentleman Jack”, “Last Tango in Halifax”, and “Renegade Nell”, along with Andrew Davies’ adaptation of Vikram Seth’s “A Suitable Boy”. At present, they are working together with BBC Studios on a new Netflix adaption of “Pride and Prejudice”. Besides this project, Lankester will continue their work and will also supervise the upcoming limited series “Tommy and Tuppence” for Lookout Point and BBC Studios on BritBox.

A24 has taken on new partnerships, expanding its lineup of British television shows as the independent studio boosts its production in the U.K. This growth is driven by substantial financial investments. The recent funding injection, which includes a $75 million investment from Josh Kushner’s Thrive Capital, values A24 at an impressive $3.5 billion. Some of the upcoming British series being developed include “Major Players” for Channel 4, directed by Molly Manning Walker who previously worked on “How to Have Sex”; Michaela Coel’s follow-up to “I May Destroy You,” titled “First Day on Earth,” for the BBC and HBO; “The Husbands” by Miriam Battye for Apple TV+; “It Gets Worse” by Leo Reich for Channel 4; and Alice Birch’s “Ministry of Time” for the BBC. Additionally, A24 is collaborating on Adam Curtis’ BBC series “Shifty,” Season 2 of the BBC/Showtime series “Dreaming Whilst Black,” Kat Sadler’s “Such Brave Girls,” and an upcoming Liverpool FC series penned by “Adolescence” writer/creator Jack Thorne.

Lankester and Johnston expressed their enthusiasm in a statement about joining A24. They are inspired by A24’s dedication to artistic quality, and working alongside Piers and Rose presents an exciting prospect. Their time at Lookout Point has been rewarding and influential, and they express gratitude towards the people they have had the privilege of collaborating with. BBC Studios has been a partner for ten years, contributing to their success.

About three years ago, A24 ventured into the United Kingdom’s television industry for the first time on a significant scale. This was marked by the recruitment of Garnett, previously the director of BBC Film, and Wenger, former head of BBC Drama, to manage their international programming portfolio.
