A24's New 'Y2K' Trailer Throws It Back to the Clinton Era

As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for comedy and a keen interest in the lives of former Saturday Night Live members, I must say that Kyle Mooney’s latest project, Y2K, has piqued my curiosity. Having spent nine years on SNL, Mooney has certainly honed his comedic chops alongside other modern comedy greats like Bill Hader and Bob Odenkirk.

Are you prepared for the ultimate New Year’s Eve bash reminiscent of 1999? Actor, director, writer, and ex-cast member of Saturday Night Live, Kyle Mooney, has been anticipating this century’s grandest party since the beginning of the year, and you’re cordially invited to join in on the excitement and chills as seen in the latest sneak peek of sci-fi horror comedy Y2K.

The movie revolves around the suspense and apprehension that swept across society in the ’90s due to a widespread fear of a potential computer system collapse on New Year’s Day 2000. Although airplanes didn’t actually plummet from the sky that night, the film poses an intriguing question: what if the world as we knew it truly came to an end?

In a twist of events, the former comedian-turned-film director invites viewers to witness a vibrant ensemble of characters struggling for their existence as if the world were truly ending, with an anomalous Bill Clinton serving as the emcee in the movie’s latest teaser. Despite the ’90s hysteria that led many people to become survivalists, accumulating supplies and backup power sources, Mooney shared with IndieWire that he secretly yearned for something tangible to emerge from all the frenzy. His personal survival of Y2K fueled his creative spirit, inspiring him to bring his apocalyptic vision to life on the silver screen.

Whenever someone mentions it, you immediately express your disappointment, saying it fell short of expectations and didn’t live up to the hype. We believed it would be something grand, but it turned out to be less than we anticipated.

In the comedy movie scripted by comedian Mooney alongside co-writer Evan Winter, they imagine a scenario where technology that was once feared for disappearing becomes self-aware and rebels against its creators. The film features Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, and Julian Dennison as a group of teenagers grappling with an unforeseen danger.

Prior to his career in feature filmmaking, Mooney was a well-known American comedian and actor, who gained fame for his nine-year stint as a cast member on the NBC sketch comedy series “Saturday Night Live” (SNL). This live program has consistently nurtured dedicated talent, with figures like Bill Hader and Bob Odenkirk also originating from it. Even the former SNL writer John Mulaney is now set to have his own stand-up comedy show on Netflix.

SNL provided Mooney with the opportunity to mingle with prominent comedy legends, undoubtedly paving the way for him to direct a feature comedy. This upcoming project will boast appearances from the director himself, Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit, The Kid Laroi, Alicia Silverstone, and comedian Tim Heidecker. Previously, Mooney shared the screen with SNL veterans such as Vanessa Bayer and Cecily Strong. Now, eager fans can catch his cinematic debut on December 6th.
