A24’s Off-Broadway Theater to Feature Film Screenings, Theater, Comedy and More

The cherished Cherry Lane Theatre, currently under A24’s ownership, is set to resume operations in September. They have exciting plans to host live stage performances, movie screenings, and various other events.

The inaugural event will be known as “Sundays with Sofia,” a film series hosted by Sofia Coppola that includes screenings followed by discussions. It begins on September 14 with a screening of Adrian Lyne’s “Foxes,” and further events are anticipated throughout the year.

The 167-seat theater is set to offer a variety of programming, including multi-week mainstage productions led by artists, showcases for rising talents featuring staged readings, stand-ups, and music performances, as well as surprise appearances from popular artists. Additionally, the theater will begin hosting events starting September 8, in preparation for “Sundays with Sofia”.

Over the past few weeks, the theater has been organizing a clandestine series of trial runs to prepare for its upcoming public debut. These events, which are part of its diverse programming strategy, encompassed a stage reading of “To Be Young, Gifted and Black“, a play by Robert Nemiroff that first appeared at the Cherry Lane in 1969, stand-up comedy from Ramy Youssef, and a listening party and live performance for fans to preview HAIM’s new album “I Quit“.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’d be all fired up if A24 were teaming up with the crew behind Frenchette, Le Rock, and Le Veauto to open a joint named Wild Cherry right at the heart of Cherry Lane!

The theater underwent renovations that included installing fresh seating, advanced technology gear, a movie projector and screen, and a modernized snack bar. However, the original stage design and historical elements have been preserved as stated by the studio.

Over the past few weeks, our theater has been bustling with exclusive events such as Ramy Youssef’s stand-up comedy night, a listening party and live performance by HAIM for their dedicated fans showcasing their new album titled “I Quit”, and a stage reading of the Robert Nemiroff play “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” which first premiered at the Cherry Lane Theatre in 1969.

In 2023, A24 acquired the century-old theater for approximately $10 million, following the theater in the West Village experiencing financial difficulties. This purchase represents a substantial real estate investment for the independent film studio, yet it’s worth noting that other businesses, such as Amazon’s Audible, are also acquiring properties, even staging shows at a nearby theater, the Minetta Lane Theater.
