As a seasoned gamer who has survived countless apocalyptic scenarios in virtual worlds, I must say, A24’s upcoming flick, Y2K, seems to have struck a chord with my inner survivalist. The trailer took me back to the golden era of the 90s, a time when dial-up modems were the kings of connectivity and Clinton was our beloved president.
As a fanatic, I can’t help but get excited about A24’s upcoming disaster-comedy venture, titled “Y2K.” The first glimpse of this film, set to release soon from the brilliant minds at A24, transports us back to the tense turn of the century on New Year’s Eve in 1999. It’s a nostalgic journey that dives deep into the ever-present anxiety of that time, making me feel like I’m right there again!
According to the synopsis of the movie directed by Kyle Mooney, “During the final hours of 1999, two teenagers from high school unexpectedly gatecrash a New Year’s Eve celebration. However, they soon find themselves in a perilous situation as they grapple for survival amidst a comical catastrophe caused by dial-up technology.
The video starts off featuring Bill Clinton delivering his Y2K address, where he announces, “Ladies and gentlemen, here is our concluding statement regarding the Year 2000 computer issue.
I, as a gamer, get whisked away to a vibrant ’90s house party, where Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, and Rachel Zegler are among the lively crowd. The atmosphere is electric, yet tinged with anticipation as pandemonium breaks loose. Amidst the chaos, snippets of Clinton’s speech appear like time capsules, interspersed with other nostalgic 90’s footage that transports me back to an era gone by.
“Party like its 1999,” reads a message on the screen, followed by “Die like it’s Y2K.”
A guest ponders, “Do you suppose there will still be a graduation ceremony?” after taking in the scene for a full minute.
Watch the trailer for Y2K in the gallery above and catch the flick in theaters on December 6.
