As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for international cinema, I must admit, I was rooting for Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies) to make it to the Oscars 2025 shortlist. Having had the privilege of witnessing Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao’s extraordinary cinematic journey, I have come to appreciate their storytelling prowess and commitment to highlighting diverse Indian narratives.
In the 2025 Oscars, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao’s movie “Lost Ladies” (formerly known as “Laapataa Ladies”) was not included among the nominees for the Best International Feature category. However, Guneet Monga’s film “Anuja” progressed in the Live Action Short Film category. Furthermore, a British production featuring Indian actors, titled “Santosh,” managed to secure a place on the shortlist for the Best International Feature Film category. The announcements were made on December 17, 2024.
Although Laapataa Ladies didn’t get nominated for the Oscars 2025, Guneet Monga Kapoor’s film Anuja was selected in the Live-Action Short Films category. The movie brings attention to the problem of child labor within the garment industry. Simultaneously, Santosh, a UK production and this year’s representation for the country, also earned a spot on the shortlist.
This year’s Oscar contenders have been whittled down from submissions by 85 different nations to a shortlist of only 15 movies. Included in this year’s choices are films such as Emilia Perez, The Girl with the Needle, and From Ground Zero.
Kiran Rao’s coming-of-age film, titled “Laapataa Ladies,” narrates the tale of two young brides living in rural India who find themselves apart from their husbands. This captivating movie was chosen to represent India in the 97th Academy Awards, scheduled for September 2024.
In simple terms, a 13-person panel headed by filmmaker Jahnu Barua commended the movie for accurately depicting the assorted tales of women from India.
Out of 29 entries across multiple Indian languages, Laapataa Ladies emerged as the clear favorite, with Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light, the winner of the Cannes Grand Prix, being one of the submissions.
Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao have been vigorously promoting their movie in the United States, attending significant functions like a BAFTA campaign screening organized by Alfonso Cuarón.
In the imaginary state of Nirmal Pradesh in 2001, the narrative unfolds around two brides who are unintentionally exchanged during a train ride. One bride ends up with the wrong groom, while the other is abandoned at a railway station. A police officer named Kishan (portrayed by Ravi Kishan) steps in to handle the investigation. The movie is adapted from an acclaimed story by Biplab Goswami.
The film “Laapataa Ladies” was created by Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, and Jyoti Deshpande, under the labels Aamir Khan Productions, Kindling Pictures, and Jio Studios respectively.
The movie was unveiled in March 2024, featuring actors Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastava, along with Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma.
