Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha failed for THIS reason, speculates Ram Gopal Varma: ‘Subject matter might not have…’

As a long-time admirer of Aamir Khan’s cinematic journey, I must say that his dedication to his craft is unparalleled. The man has time and again proven his versatility as an actor, delivering performances that resonate deeply with the audience. However, it seems that not every endeavor yields the desired success, such as Laal Singh Chaddha.

Aamir Khan is often recognized as an actor with numerous successful films under his belt throughout his illustrious career. Yet, there have been instances where his films didn’t resonate strongly at the box office or with audiences. An example of this is the 2022 comedy-drama film Laal Singh Chaddha, which, despite being one of Khan’s most ambitious projects, did not find favor in India. However, it appears to have been a hit overseas.

The upcoming film is an Indian adaptation of director Robert Zemeckis’ 1994 American comedy-drama, “Forrest Gump,” which was originally directed. Recently, renowned Indian filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma discussed Aamir’s fascination with Forrest Gump during an interview with Galatta Plus. He also pondered the reasons why the movie didn’t achieve blockbuster status.

Aamir Khan expressed his admiration for Forrest Gump. As a result, Laal Singh Chaddha seemed like an ideal project for him, one that he’d been envisioning for years. The director of Sarkar 3 added that it’s uncertain if the film would have turned out successfully or not. However, what matters is that by the end, Aamir was appealing to an audience who hadn’t previously seen Forrest Gump, according to Varma.

In the interview, he explained that the film was essentially like one starring Aamir Khan, meaning it didn’t require a historical background to be interesting. He also mentioned that the similarities between this film and Forrest Gump might not capture the audience’s attention initially, but these are just assumptions. He concluded by saying, “However, keep in mind that these are all speculations.”

Apart from discussing the 2018 film “Thugs of Hindostan,” directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the director also expressed his viewpoint. He believes that a movie being considered bad is subjective and no one can truly predict what will appeal to the public. In essence, he suggested that it’s impossible to second-guess the tastes of the general audience.

For those not in the know, Laal Singh Chaddha includes Kareena Kapoor Khan, Naga Chaitanya, and Mona Singh as part of its star-studded cast. Meanwhile, Aamir Khan is currently engrossed in filming his upcoming project, Sitaare Zameen Par, where he works alongside Genelia Deshmukh. This sports drama is an adaptation of the Spanish film Champions and is set to hit theaters on December 27, 2024.
