Aaron Ashmore Blasts Smallville’s Shocking Jimmy Olsen Twist

The actor who played “Jimmy” Olsen on the well-known The CW series has been pondering over his exit from the show, and admits that he’s still a bit irked about how his character was reversed in the program.

On the “Inside of You” podcast, Ashmore reunited with his previous co-star Michael Rosenbaum, and as conversations often do, they reminisced about their days on “Smallville.” Discussing the surprising manner in which his character met an end on the show, the actor also shared memories of discovering that he wasn’t portraying Jimmy Olsen as he initially thought. He stated:

“During our chat on ‘Inside of You,’ Michael and I fondly looked back at our time on ‘Smallville.’ I opened up about how my character’s death came as a shock, and I even shared the moment when I learned that I wasn’t playing Jimmy Olsen as I had initially assumed.

Apparently, the version of Superman they’re using isn’t the traditional one we’re familiar with. As a result, I can’t play Jimmy Olsen because he’s supposed to be older than my character. It’s disappointing since I’ve been promoting this role for three years and people thought I was part of the Superman canon. Now it turns out I’ve been misleading them!

I felt quite let down because I wasn’t fond of how they handled the situation towards the end of the season. It seemed somewhat unsatisfying and contrived to me. They waited until the final moments to reveal this, when it would have been better if they had shared it earlier. Ideally, at the start of the season, they could have given a heads-up like, “This is where we’re heading.” I don’t believe their decision was spontaneous; I suspect they knew all along that this would be the direction, but they only informed me in the previous episode. This feels like an underwhelming way to essentially be let go, by means of a strange, “Well…you are not really [Jimmy Olsen].” I was taken aback, thinking, “Alright, so what’s next for me?” However, yes, I must admit that I was somewhat disheartened by the whole situation.

A Smallville Sequel Series Looks less Likely Right Now

In the most recent installment of Welling and Rosenbaum’s podcast Talk Ville, hosts Tom Welling and Rosenbaum welcomed Smallville co-creator Al Gough to discuss the delay in the anticipated animated Smallville sequel. It appears that the cause behind this delay is none other than James Gunn’s Superman project. For now, Warner Bros. and DC are concentrating on the upcoming live-action Superman film, while any additional Superman-related projects take a back seat. Gough stated:

The main challenge with most projects under development at studios and networks is frequent leadership changes. Warner Bros., for instance, has faced many transitions, and their ongoing efforts to reintroduce Superman seem to have temporarily delayed our project. However, I believe that everything eventually resurfaces in some form, as I recently learned they’re planning a revival of Buffy on Hulu.
