On Christmas Eve, the Schemmenti family takes on the role of gracious hosts, sparing no effort in ensuring every detail is flawless. Simultaneously, an unanticipated visitor shows up at the doorstep of Janine and Gregory.
‘Abbott Elementary’ Already Has An Impressive Guest Star Track Record
Based on Melissa Schemmenti’s tough, straightforward, and distinctly Italian demeanor, it seems reasonable to infer that her mother will be an even stronger embodiment of a no-nonsense Italian mother from Philadelphia. The network has also shared a photo of the two on their ABC press site (as shown above).

It was a bit unexpected that Brunson and Co. didn’t quickly accept Bette Midler’s offer to play the role of Melissa’s mother in Hocus Pocus, given that she openly expressed her desire to join the cast on Twitter earlier this year.
She had written on a tweet (which she later deleted after closing her account), “Now that I’m promoting myself for TV shows via this site, I would be thrilled to portray Melissa Schemmenti’s mother on Abbott Elementary. If you happen to meet Quinta Brunson, kindly inform her of my interest.
Approximately three weeks passed, and Brunson herself addressed the inquiry during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. She expressed her feelings by stating, “I am utterly delighted that Bette Midler wishes to appear on my program. Such moments are truly surreal, like a dream come true, as it’s hard to believe that Bette Midler wants to join my show. I am simply overwhelmed by this incredible honor.
Walter remarked, “She remains an iconic figure in our minds.” He continued, “She’s truly a remarkable actress. She’s not just bold and brash, as you might think; she embodies that aspect too. But she’s also exceptionally skilled and versatile, showing great depth and subtlety in her performances.
Without a doubt, Shire is certain to excel in the role; we’re optimistic that Midler might someday be part of the group as well – maybe as a jovial aunt to Melissa or a sister figure to her mother? Given that the Schemmenti family are known for their closeness, it wouldn’t surprise us.
