ABC News Studios, CBC Acquires ‘Lilith Fair: Build a Mystery’ Doc Ahead of Toronto Fest Bow (Exclusive)

The news studios of ABC News and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation have secured the U.S. broadcast rights for “Lilith Fair: Unraveling a Secret,” a feature documentary directed by Ally Pankiw that delves into Sarah McLachlan’s 1990s female-centric music festival.

Following its debut at the Toronto Film Festival, Canada’s CBC network, one of its supporters, plans to broadcast the independent documentary on September 17 as part of their The Passionate Eye series. Subsequently, in the United States, Hulu and Disney+ will make the film available for streaming from September 21.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that the film will be available for streaming on Disney+ internationally towards the end of this year! This exciting news aligns perfectly with Sarah McLachlan releasing her long-awaited first studio album in over a decade, “Better Broken,” on September 19. To make things even more exhilarating, she’ll be embarking on a Canadian concert tour as well! I can hardly wait!

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “I’m overwhelmed with pride and a wave of nostalgia while watching this Lilith Fair doc. Ally and their team have masterfully encapsulated the enchantment and resilience of a sisterhood of women who united to make a difference in our world. I hope this film resonates with everyone, inspiring us all to keep uplifting and championing each other.

Dan Levy’s Fictitious Production Company and independent Canadian distributor Elevation Pictures are collaborating on the production of this documentary, featuring interviews with Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlile, Erykah Badu, Bonnie Raitt, Jewel, and Olivia Rodrigo, among others. The movie is brought to you by White Horse Pictures, in partnership with Epic Magazine.

Sarah, Dan, Ally, and numerous gifted professionals have poured their hearts into creating this movie. Diane Sawyer and ABC News Studios are thrilled to be involved in this adventure. Debra O’Connell, president of ABC News Group and Disney Entertainment Networks, made a statement expressing her excitement. She described the project as a beautiful collaboration between artists, producers, and storytellers, each contributing to document one of the most significant musical periods over the past three decades, much like Lilith Fair.

The inaugural Lilith Fair, spearheaded by McLachlan to challenge the male-dominated music industry that only saw room for one woman on stage or in radio playlists, debuted on July 5, 1997. Nearly a quarter-century has passed since then, and a film, authorized by McLachlan and inspired by the 2019 Vanity Fair article “Building a Mystery: An Oral History of Lilith Fair” written by Jessica Hopper, Sasha Geffen, and Jenn Pelly, will have its grand premiere at Roy Thomson Hall during TIFF.

Lilith Fair: Unveiling the Enigma utilizes more than 600 hours of previously unseen archival footage, interviews, and anecdotes from fans, festival organizers, and performers of Lilith Fair. This musical event served as a refreshing alternative to mainstream tours such as Lollapalooza, which were predominantly male-driven and flashy. Despite its commercial triumph over three consecutive summers, the documentary chronicles how the Lilith Fair tour’s female headliners faced marginalization, and the event itself was lampooned on Saturday Night Live.

The key message behind Lilith Fair – providing a platform for women artists to perform safely – will be highlighted as the Canadian documentary premieres in Toronto. Pankiw, known for works such as “I Used to Be Funny” and “Black Mirror,” has connections with Hulu following her directing roles on their shows “Shrill” and “The Great.” Additionally, Pankiw directed the entire first season of the Netflix comedy “Feel Good,” starring Mae Martin.

Beginning in the late 1990s, Sarah McLachlan’s vision for the Lilith Fair festival significantly influenced the music industry, an impact that remains relevant today. Jennifer Dettman, executive director of unscripted content at the CBC, expressed this sentiment in a statement, mentioning that come fall, viewers across Canada will get a behind-the-scenes look at this pivotal moment in music history, as we delve into contemporary insights from those who experienced it firsthand.

White Horse Pictures’ sales agent is currently marketing the film globally, whereas Elevation Pictures plans to release the Lilith Fair documentary in Canadian cinemas.

The movie is made by Levy and Christina Piovesan, while Cassidy Hartmann from White Horse Pictures, along with Nicholas Ferrall, Nigel Sinclair, Jeanne Elfant Festa, Noah Segal, Jessica Hopper, Arthur Spector, Joshuah Bearman, Joshua Davis, Pankiw, Steve Cohen, Paula Froehle and Wayne Isaak, all serve as executive producers. Rachel McLean acts as the supervising producer and Nina Djacic is the cinematographer.

The movie is supported by the co-founders of Lilith Fair led by Terry McLachlan (Terry McBride, Dan Fraser, and Marty Diamond). They will serve as executive producers alongside Lynne Stopkewich, Jessica Fraser, and Dean English.

As I delve into this fascinating journey, let me share that it’s not just my story, but a collaboration brought to life by the Chicago Media Project, Epic Magazine, Carlene Laughlin, Minderoo Pictures, and the Elfant Festa Family. Together, we’re creating something extraordinary for all gaming enthusiasts out there.
