ABC’s Drama Lineup Just Got Even Better: Major Renewals Announced!

ABC is continuing to accelerate its success as a premier network for dramas and comedies. They’ve recently announced the renewal of several of their most popular shows, such as “9-1-1”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “The Rookie”, “Will Trent” and others. Fans can look forward to new seasons of these shows, taking “9-1-1” into its ninth season, “Grey’s Anatomy” into its 22nd season (one of the longest-running dramas on television), “The Rookie” into its eighth season, and “Will Trent” into its fourth. Additionally, “Shifting Gears”, starring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings, is among the fortunate shows to receive another season.

Moving forward with the renewal process, ABC has announced that the successful shows “High Potential” and its hit comedy “Abbott Elementary”, led by Quinta Brunson, have been given another season. However, as reported by Variety, only one series remains in limbo – “Doctor Odyssey”. This medical drama series features Joshua Jackson as Dr. Max Bankman, a new doctor aboard a luxury cruise ship named The Odyssey, along with his small yet powerful medical team. They handle cases far from land. Joining the cast are Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale, and Don Johnson, known for his role in “Nash Bridges”. With an average of 2 million viewers per episode and a crossover with “9-1-1”, will this be enough to secure creators Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken a second season? We’ll soon find out.

Among the renewals that weren’t unexpected, the one that took us by surprise was “Shifting Gears.” This show revolves around the character of Matt Parker, portrayed by Tim Allen, who is a disheartened widower grieving over his wife’s passing. Kat Dennings plays his daughter Riley Parker, while Matt’s grandchildren Carter and Georgia Parker, Riley’s children, are played by Maxwell Simkins and Barrett Margolis respectively. Seann William Scott and former rapper Daryl “Chill” Mitchell also join the cast. In its inaugural season, it aired 10 episodes, averaging around 3 million viewers per episode, but garnered a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Since its premiere in January, the viewership has decreased noticeably.

‘9-1-1’ & ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Are Two of ABC’s Most Popular Shows

As a movie enthusiast, I must share some exciting news about ABC’s TV lineup. Contrary to recent speculation, ABC hasn’t commissioned any pilots for the moment. However, this doesn’t mean we won’t see something fresh on our screens soon! In fact, ABC has greenlit a straight-to-series spin-off of the hit show, 9-1-1 – titled 9-1-1: Nashville. And get ready for some star power, as Chris O’Donnell is set to take on a prominent role in this new series!

Experiencing the thrilling world of 9-1-1, I find myself drawn in by an exceptional cast led by Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Oliver Stark, Kenneth Choi, Aisha Hinds, Ryan Guzman, and Gavin McHugh. This Ryan Murphy creation takes us on a journey through calls that range from the extraordinary to those that change lives forever, with an impressive 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The series has also garnered a commendable 7.9/10 on IMDb overall.

Initially airing on March 27, 2005, “Grey’s Anatomy” has been a television staple that might outlast us. With its 22nd season approaching, it stands as one of the longest-running medical dramas ever produced. Despite numerous cast changes, Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, and James Pickens Jr. have remained constant members of the Shonda Rhimes series since its inception.
