- One of the best-designed controllers I’ve used
- Pretty basic in parts but it works
- A controller for all seasons
As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I have to say that the abxylute s9 has truly impressed me. Having tested various controllers over the years, I can confidently say that this one is up there with the best.
Although touchscreen controls on smartphones function surprisingly well for many games, I must confess I was skeptical years ago. Occasionally, a good controller is necessary. For instance, in Rocket League Sideswipe, I’m convinced that goal was the fault of the touchscreen, not a significant skill oversight. The market is vast, and even absolute giants like abxylute are entering it with their s9 device.
Although the mobile controller is a new venture for abxylute, they’ve got a solid background in the handheld market, thanks to the C6 wireless controller and their cloud gaming console. Prior to its release, I’ve had the opportunity to test the s9, and let me tell you, it seems like they’re already experts at what they do. This device is simply outstanding!
A solid design in exchange for easy portability
Starting with the feature that’s both advantageous and challenging – its size. It can expand to fit 8.8-inch tablets, undeniably impressive, but it does make the device rather large. At the minimum, you won’t be slipping this into your pocket. Given this, I lean towards a modular design for better portability.
The ample space provided to the team allowed them to create extensively, and they certainly utilized it to its full potential. The quality of the buttons is palpable, offering a satisfying click and being appropriately sized for a mobile controller. The joysticks share similar qualities. In terms of comfort, it offers a sensation similar to an Xbox Series X. While it’s not the most pleasant to grip, it’s tolerable for extended periods.
One advantage of this design is its excellent device-holding ability. Once connected, it remains firmly in place and doesn’t move. Shaking it upside down, even forcefully, didn’t cause it to lose its grip. In fact, I tested it with a phone that has a prominent camera, and it sat comfortably without any risk of slipping.
An app you might forget
Once connected and given a brief shake, you’ll find yourself at the Abxy Game application – your fresh destination for game launches. Frankly speaking, it functions well, which is commendable. It swiftly provides access to Cloud Gaming services like Game Pass, and allows you to consolidate your personal library as well. However, its aesthetic appeal leaves much to be desired, making it less inviting.
I often yearned for a more structured setup rather than anything else. For instance, it offers sections such as New Arrivals and possibly three genre options. Despite functioning flawlessly, it feels quite minimalistic. However, it’s important to note that despite its simplicity, it provides all the necessary features including controller mapping, without requiring any subscription – a feature not commonly found in other companies.
Incredibly versatile device
When it comes to actually playing games, the S9 offers an abundance of options to suit your needs. With various modes available, you can select one based on what game you’re playing. Prefer using PlayStation’s Remote Play feature? Switch to PS Mode; or maybe Game Pass or GeForce Now appeals to you? Give Xinput Mode a try. For Nintendo Switch enthusiasts, there’s even a dedicated Nintendo Switch Mode if you decide to connect it.
This handy device is incredibly adaptable, prompting me to discover yet another useful application I can’t help but pass along. With it, you can connect your phone to the S9, switch to Bluetooth mode, link it to your PC or gaming console, and then enjoy playing games while watching something on your phone or accessing guides. Perhaps even reading some mobile gaming articles from your preferred site? Essentially, it serves as a PlayStation Portal, but with enhanced functionality.
No-frills controller mapping that works perfectly
With regards to the practical application of this device; mobile gaming. One standout feature of the S9 is its controller mapping, which has become almost essential in today’s gaming landscape. This feature allows you to customize controls for any game that doesn’t inherently support controllers, and it’s quite straightforward to set up. You simply choose your buttons, move them around, adjust their size, and you’re ready to play. It might seem simple, but an intricate interface isn’t necessary as it functions flawlessly.
As a gamer, here’s my take on the S9 pre-launch console I’m currently playing with. Although updates might introduce new features, I can only comment on what’s available now. Two aspects of the mapping system are causing me some inconvenience at present. Primarily, I find it frustrating that I can’t assign combo button inputs, such as RT + A. While most games don’t require extensive command combinations, having this option adds a layer of customization that enhances the gaming experience.
Moving on, let’s discuss the system settings, specifically the customizable configurations or saved layouts of your mappings. At present, you can only save a single configuration, which is troublesome for games like Honkai Star Rail as you frequently switch between Exploration and Battle modes. I hope they add the ability to save more configurations soon. Additionally, if this feature is implemented, I strongly request that Abyxlute includes a quick-change function. The GameSir X4 Aileron has made me accustomed to instant profile switching, so I would appreciate it if the S9 also had this capability.
Arguably the best way to play mobile games
Despite some minor imperfections, the S9 stands out in a way that makes those shortcomings irrelevant when you hold it. I’ve put it through its paces with games like Forza Horizon 4 via GamePass, Rocket League Sideswipe using controller mapping, and Final Fantasy XIV on Remote Play. The S9 performed exceptionally well, offering a smooth, lag-free gaming experience, save for occasional hiccups when streaming quality dipped to rural levels. However, I never felt significantly discomforted, and the overall feel of the device is truly remarkable.
Using the S9 feels remarkably tactile and purposeful. Each button press provides a solid, satisfying click, while the joypads have a substantial weight that makes them feel like reliable tools in your gaming journey. Interestingly, it gives a sense of progress as you play, making each step towards your goal feel meaningful. Surprisingly, I find myself preferring the feel of the S9 over console controllers, and discovering that its price point is reasonable only adds to its appeal.
Hey there fellow gaming enthusiast! I’m just here to share some info about an exciting offer on Kickstarter. The S9 gaming controller isn’t a sales pitch, we’re not making money off this – it’s straight facts!
