As a seasoned horror connoisseur who’s spent countless nights huddled under blankets, peeking through slits in my fingers at the chilling spectacle unfolding before me, I can confidently say that “In a Violent Nature” is a must-watch for any true horror enthusiast. This movie takes the slasher genre to new heights by daring to explore the perspective of the killer, and it does so in a way that’s both unsettling and captivating.
One of this year’s best horror outings, the slasher movie In a Violent Nature, is now available to stream on Shudder. And it should make the perfect cinematic experience for Friday the 13th. Written and directed by Chris Nash and made in association with IFC Films and Shudder Films, In a Violent Nature tells the perfect slasher tale while taking a surprisingly unique approach to the way that tale is told. The story (and bloodshed) begins when a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods. Little did the unsuspecting victims know that this is what entombed the corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific crime from decades ago. Oops. Now, Johnny is here…and he wants his locket back.
In a similar vein to how many slasher movie villains deal with their victims, In a Violent Nature turns the traditional slasher genre upside down by presenting the narrative from the killer’s point of view. The audience follows Johnny as he methodically navigates through the woods in pursuit of those who have taken his cherished item. The film deliberately builds suspense, making viewers wait for the killings, which can intensify the tension. When the kills do occur, they are graphic and grisly, providing a satisfying payoff for horror enthusiasts. In essence, the journey through the woods is a rewarding experience, even with the anticipation.
The film titled “In a Violent Nature” received generally favorable critiques and currently holds an impressive rating of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. Notably, MovieWeb’s critic Will Sayre commended the movie for its commitment to the theme and effectively placing viewers in the role of the killer, a feat surpassing that of any other slasher film to date.
“The sound level of dialogue is directly proportional to the distance Johnny is from its source, which, combined with the camera’s placement directly behind Johnny, situates you right in the killer’s sensory experience. While other films have done this in tiny ways in order to implicate the audience for their salacious and violent desires (Peeping Tom, Funny Games, Salò), In a Violent Nature seems to have a different agenda. It’s an artistic, thought-provoking device that refuses to give in to the temptation of impatient audiences out there who will say, “Just hurry up and get to the action, already!””
In a Violent Nature 2 Is Now in the Works
After the triumph of Johnny’s initial slasher film, preparations are underway for a follow-up. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that IFC Films, Shudder, and AMC Networks have joined forces to bring back Johnny for another installment. In an earlier statement, producer Peter Kuplowsky disclosed their intention to establish a new slasher series, hinting that the innovative elements showcased in the first movie will be further explored.
Originally, “In a Violent Nature” was planned as an extended story within a fictional slasher series, envisioning chaos that surpassed the initial movie’s boundaries. Now that we can continue Johnny’s tumultuous journey, we feel incredibly thankful to IFC Films / Shudder, our amazing partners who supported Chris’ vision from the beginning. We’re ecstatic to embark on a new chapter and can’t wait to use Johnny as a tool for more genre-bending explorations.
