At CES 2025, Acer unveiled two fresh additions to their handheld gaming lineup: the Nitro Blaze 8 and Nitro Blaze 11. These announcements mark an expansion of their portable gaming collection and a continued focus on mobile PC gaming endeavors. Additionally, at this event, they introduced their innovative foldable Nitro Mobile Gaming Controller.
The latest mobile processors from AMD, specifically the Ryzen 8040 Series, power the new Nitro Blaze duo. Each device comes equipped with 16GB of RAM as a standard feature, and there’s an option to upgrade the internal storage up to a capacity of 2TB.
In simpler terms, both the Nitro Blaze 8 and Nitro Blaze 11 models come equipped with AMD’s top-tier Ryzen 7 8840HS processor. This is a significant upgrade compared to the AMD Z1 Extreme processors commonly found in today’s high-end handheld PCs. The enhanced processors can deliver up to 39 total AI TOPS (Top Operations Per Second), significantly boosting the performance capabilities that were already impressive with the previous processor. Acer is optimistic that their new devices will handle AAA gaming smoothly.
The Nitro Blaze 8 and Nitro Blaze 11 boast touch screens measuring approximately 8.8 inches (Nitro Blaze 8) and 10.95 inches (Nitro Blaze 11), respectively. Although these displays aren’t OLED, they offer a swift refresh rate of 144 Hz. To keep the price reasonable, Acer has opted for an AMD Radeon 780M graphics card instead. This GPU leverages AMD’s Radeon and FidelityFX Super Resolution technologies to provide smooth, upscaled gaming experiences.
Among the two models, the Nitro Blaze 11 stands out for its detachable controllers, a design inspired by the Nintendo Switch and previously only seen in Lenovo’s handheld PC segment. This feature allows it to be used both as a portable device and somewhat like a desktop. On the other hand, the Nitro Blaze 8’s controllers aren’t detachable, but both models share Hall Effect triggers and sticks, which help them avoid the usual issue of “stick drift” that can affect non-Hall Effect controllers over time.
These devices offer fast wireless connectivity choices such as Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. They also feature dual USB-C ports, one of which is a USB 4 port that allows for incredibly quick wired connections capable of transferring data at an impressive speed of 40 Gbps. The other USB-C port supports charging and connecting accessories with the USB 3.2 standard.
The new foldable design of Acer’s Nitro Mobile Gaming Controller offers an impressive boost in portability. This device works seamlessly with both iOS and Android devices, connecting directly via USB-C to minimize input lag, a common issue with Bluetooth controllers. Plus, it offers pass-through charging at 18W, ensuring uninterrupted gameplay even if your device’s battery is running low.
One standout feature of the Nitro Mobile Gaming Controller is its ability to support devices with displays up to 8.3 inches, making it suitable for smaller tablets such as the iPad Mini. This is significant because there haven’t been many mobile controllers in the market that can work with tablets, especially from well-known brands. While GameSir’s G8+ controller is an option, it relies on Bluetooth, which may introduce some input lag – a concern for competitive gamers or those seeking optimal performance in games where quick reactions are crucial. However, Acer’s newly released controller boasts a hard-wired USB-C connection, offering a potentially lag-free gaming experience to enthusiasts.
Acer has just entered the portable gaming market by introducing its inaugural device, the Nitro Blaze 7, in September. These rapid announcements suggest that Acer is aiming to make a significant impact in the mobile gaming industry.
The Acer Nitro Blaze 8 is priced at $899 USD / €999 EUR, while the Acer Nitro Blaze 11 will be available for $1,099 USD / €1,199 EUR. Both models are expected to hit the market sometime in the second quarter of this year.
The Acer Nitro Mobile Gaming Controller, priced at around $70 USD or €90 EUR, is expected to launch a bit sooner, likely within the first quarter of the year. Keep an eye out for further announcements.
