Acne Studios’ Kappa Collaboration Was a Long Time Coming

As a die-hard fan, I must admit that Acne Studios truly shines on the runway, but it’s not just about high fashion for them. Over the past decade, under the guidance of Jonny Johansson, this Swedish luxury label has delved into the world of football, creating scarves inspired by the game, sneakers reminiscent of cleats, and an entire “Fotbollsklubb” collection to cater to football enthusiasts. Last year, they dropped a fashion jersey that was the talk of the town – a long-sleeve pastel pink top adorned with swirling Acne Studios logos, which sent luxury designers’ soccer buzz to new heights.

Now, having experimented extensively with stylish clothing, the brand is moving towards a more serious approach to fashion, symbolized by a 22-piece collection in partnership with Kappa.

Historically speaking, Kappa has been an Italian company known for creating popular football jerseys. Some examples include the home shirts of Juventus from 1978 and AC Milan from 1989, as well as Manchester City’s away kit from 1997 and Brescia’s away kit from 2004. More recently, Kappa has been the design force behind several smaller, trendy clubs such as UD Ibiza and Athens Kallithea.

This partnership between Acne Studios and the sportswear brand signifies a more deliberate approach towards addressing the ongoing trend of blokecore. Given Acne Studios’ established reputation for creating clothing with a gaming aesthetic, this collaboration seems like a natural progression, considering their past achievements in this area.

Drawing inspiration from timeless retro football designs, I find myself captivated by this capsule collection that artfully blends traditional sports aesthetics with the unique silhouettes and emblems of Acne Studios. Highlights include vibrant jerseys adorned with flame prints in a striking shade similar to last year’s Acne Studios football kit, alongside relaxed pale-wash denim trousers and tracksuits embellished with Kappa logos running down the legs. The collection also features fitted tops that evoke the tight-fitting base layers worn by players, and a brand new Bolina bag, first introduced on Acne Studios’ SS25 runway, showcases the collaboration’s flame iconography and dual logos.

The assortment comes accompanied by a campaign featuring Tricky, the acclaimed British record producer and musician recognized for his trip-hop albums, such as “Maxinquaye.” In a statement, Johansson expressed, “Tricky’s music has significantly influenced my life. I’ve been an admirer for quite some time, and collaborating with him on this endeavor felt perfectly natural.

I was with fantastic company today. It turned out to be an enjoyable and relaxed experience. Normally, I get anxious around groups of unfamiliar faces, but they managed to make me feel as if I were among friends,” Tricky remarked.

As a fervent admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the eagerly awaited Acne Studios x Kappa collection will be up for grabs online from March 27th! For those who prefer an in-store shopping experience, mark your calendars for April 3rd when it lands in global Acne Studios stores.
