As a seasoned moviegoer with over two decades of experiencing various cinematic offerings, I must admit that the underwhelming performance of “The Killer’s Game” at the box office leaves me somewhat disheartened. Having witnessed Dave Bautista‘s meteoric rise from WWE ring to Hollywood stardom, it’s disappointing to see such a promising cast and concept fail to resonate with audiences.
Despite strong performances in “Knock at the Cabin” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” the action film unfortunately underperformed at the box office. As a regular ensemble player, Dave Bautista may have had less impact on the movie’s success compared to bigger titles like “Guardians of the Galaxy” or “Dune.” Additionally, “The Killer’s Game” was never expected to compete with these blockbusters, and its lackluster marketing campaign might have contributed to its poor performance. Few people could recall seeing any advertisements for it prior to its release week.
Even with Bautista, Rebel Moon‘s Sofia Boutella, fellow Guardians of the Galaxy vet Pom Klementieff, Deadpool 2‘s Terry Crews, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ Ben Kingsley, and superstar Ice Cube, The Killer’s Game was undoubtedly the big loser of an already slow weekend at the box office. It opened in sixth place with $2.6 million at 2,623 theaters. First place went to legacy sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ($51.6 million, a very solid drop of just 53.5%) while the number two spot went to fellow newcomer Speak No Evil, with the Blumhouse movie debuting at 3,375 theaters and scoring a respectable $11.5 million.
It’s unfortunate to note that Dave Bautista’s latest film, “The Killer’s Game,” has had a disappointing box office run. Previously, the lowest-grossing movie for him was “Hotel Artemis,” which earned $6.7 million in total domestic sales (as reported by Box Office Mojo). This means that “The Killer’s Game” is expected to hit streaming platforms earlier than anticipated, and given its genre, it might perform better on smaller screens. It seems his next project, a buddy cop movie with Jason Momoa, could be a more accurate showcase of his star power.
The Killer’s Game Promises No-Nonsense Action Excitement
Under the direction of J.J. Perry and script by Rand Ravich and James Coyne, the action-comedy titled “The Killer’s Game” delivers raw, thrilling excitement. The narrative revolves around Bautista’s hitman character, Joe Flood, who learns he has a terminal illness from a doctor. In an unexpected turn of events, he is incorrectly diagnosed, and the hit on him cannot be canceled. With his life now at stake, Flood must navigate through a group of skilled associates, each aiming to collect a substantial reward for his elimination.
With “The Killer’s Game” now in theaters, what other projects does Bautista have planned? Recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival is “The Last Showgirl,” a critically acclaimed drama led by Pamela Anderson and directed by Gia Coppola. If released by year-end, it could potentially be an Oscar contender. Additionally, there’s “Trap House” where Bautista plays a DEA agent tracking his own child involved in cartel robberies. He will also star as the lead in the post-apocalyptic sci-fi film “Afterburn,” teaming up with Marvel co-star Samuel L. Jackson. In summary, Bautista has numerous opportunities for success ahead.
