One actor involved in Disney’s upcoming live-action version of Snow White has expressed his opinions as discussions about the film’s release continue to swirl.
Martin Klebba, who’s known for his roles in two prior adaptations of Snow White, including the 2012 film Mirror Mirror with Julia Roberts and Lily Collins, lends his voice to Grumpy in the upcoming movie and advises on the miner characters. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Klebba expresses that the recent controversies surrounding Snow White have made for a less festive atmosphere for those involved in the production, which features Rachel Zegler as the titular character and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. The film’s Saturday premiere reportedly declined to invite press onto the red carpet due to the ongoing debates about the movie.
Klebba explains that the event won’t be a grand, red-carpet affair. Instead, he’s excited to share the movie at the El Capitan Theatre, but it will essentially be a pre-screening event with the main attraction being watching the film itself. He mentions that due to the ongoing controversy, Disney is cautious about the potential backlash from various sectors of society, so they are not planning any elaborate fanfare or “Disney’s first ever movie” spectacle.
Klebba stated that the initial alterations were primarily because of the uproar surrounding Rachel, although he emphasized that he didn’t receive explicit details about why the event was modified. It is worth noting that Zegler, a vocal actress, expressed her dislike for the 1937 animated original in 2022 due to outdated storylines. Furthermore, following President Donald Trump’s election in November, Zegler posted critical comments on social media about his victory, later apologizing for them.
In the year 2022, prior to the start of filming for the latest version of Snow White, Peter Dinklage sparked controversy by criticizing Disney’s decision to rehash “the old tale about seven dwarves residing in a cave together.” It was revealed that the movie had initially planned to employ motion-capture animation for the seven miners featured in it. As the voice actor for Grumpy, Klebba is the only person of short stature who lends their voice to one of the seven dwarves in this film.
As a gamer, I rarely delve into political matters, but when I heard, “Dwarves aren’t just going to vanish because you can’t see them,” Klebba articulated, it resonated with me. Just like any other gaming character, we’re here to stay, persisting through the storylines. Frankly, I didn’t understand the fuss about excluding dwarves. After all, their presence in the narrative has been a constant for ages, and they are an essential part of the classic lore.
As a fan, I can certainly appreciate Klebba’s perspective. When crafting a movie with CGI animals, it was smart to extend the use of VFX for the dwarfs as well. It simply allows for greater creative control over their appearance, ensuring they all maintain a consistent size. Finding seven little people actors to portray them authentically is no small feat, making this approach a practical choice.
As a gamer, I found myself taken aback when I learned the title of the latest movie, “Snow White,” didn’t include any reference to dwarfs like the original 1937 version did. Klebba expressed his wish that they had kept them in the title, stating, “I wouldn’t have changed it. But the marketing folks know their stuff.
The actor is thankful for being part of three movie productions linked to Disney theme park attractions, on top of his roles within the Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion series. If given a chance in future Disney projects, Klebba expresses his desire to be thought of as a fit for playing the Marvel character Puck, who is well-known from comic books for having dwarfism.
Klebba, who co-stars with Chris Pratt in “The Electric State,” humorously remarks, “I’ve been waiting an eternity for a script set in the Marvel Universe, not just these handsome men like Chris Pratt. Let’s introduce a fresh character, someone who doesn’t fit the mold of a typical superhero.
