Actors Turned Idols: Hollywood Stars’ Secret ‘American Idol’ Auditions!

Reacher might have made you believe that Alan Ritchson is all muscle and threats, but he has other hidden talents. One of them is singing, a passion that stretches back to his childhood days. While he was younger, Ritchson performed in numerous musicals. He reportedly took college-level music, theater, and dance classes while still in high school. After graduating, he was granted a full scholarship to study music and theater arts at Northwest Florida State College.

Ritchson’s love of music reached a peak when he became one of the top 87 contestants in Season 3 of American Idol. Watching the season, one can see that his penchant for showing off his body started way early. In one episode, he does the striptease, leaving some judges irked and some awed. Interestingly, Ritchson isn’t the only actor to appear in the singing competition series. A few other popular names from the film and TV industries tried their luck, to varying success.

6
Lucy Hale

Lucy Hale is best known for her role as the artsy teen, Aria Montgomery, in the Freeform show, Pretty Little Liars. Besides that, she gained early recognition for starring in the sci-fi drama, Bionic Woman and the comedy-drama, Privileged. Hale has received various accolades, including seven Teen Choice Awards (the most for any actress in a single series). She also has a great passion for music. She is one of the five winners of the short-lived reality show American Juniors, a child-based spinoff of American Idol.

Hale’s Grip on Music Has Remained Firm

Being one of the stars of Pretty Little Liars would make any actor comfortable, but Hale hasn’t just sat back and enjoyed her fame. Immediately after leaving American Juniors, she formed a group with her fellow top five contestants, though it disbanded shortly after. In 2012, she signed a record deal with Hollywood Records and in 2014, she released her debut album, Road Between, which peaked at position 14 on the US Billboard 200. She has described music as her “first love,” though she has continued to find greater success on television.

5
Katharine McPhee

To television lovers, Katharine McPhee is known for playing Paige, a member of a team that deals with tech-related threats, in the action TV show, Scorpion. She has also had roles in CSI: NY, Family Guy, and Community, among other major productions. Music-wise, McPhee has excelled too, and was the runner-up on Season 5 of American Idol.

A Strong Background

McPhee’s acting and musical influences come from both of her parents. Her father, Daniel McPhee, was a television producer and her mom, Peisha (née Burch) McPhee, has been a vocal coach on American Idol since 2011. Thanks to her background and personal drive, McPhee has held on to both of her passions. She has released five albums ever since she left the reality singing competition. Her eponymous debut album is her most memorable one as it debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling 381,000 copies. You can also catch her in Season 6 of The Masked Singer.

4
David Archuleta

Among many things, David Archuleta made a name for himself for his appearances in Hannah Montana, the teen sitcom, iCarly, and the Philippine drama, Here I Am. However, his career took off when he finished second on the seventh season of American Idol.

Experience as the Best Teacher

Archuleta’s appearance in American Idol came as no shocker since he has always been into music more than acting. He also had plenty of experience before appearing in the popular singing competition. At the age of 10, he won the children’s division of the Utah Talent Competition, and when he was 12, he became the Junior Vocal Champion in Star Search 2. Today, Archuleta has plenty to be proud of. From numerous Teen Choice Awards to an album that debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart, the singer-actor keeps winning.

3
Haley Reinhart

Haley Reinhart made her film debut in the Netflix superhero kids movie, We Can Be Heroes, where she played Ms. Vox, a mutant with a sonar scream. Before that, she had lent her services to 90210 and the adult animated sitcom, F Is for Family. But her fame came much earlier when she got the internet buzzing because of her jazz fusion and rock styles when she appeared on Season 10 of American Idol.

A Legend of the Show

We also don’t have to look too far to trace the origin of Reinhart’s passion for music. Both her parents were musicians. Her mother was once the lead singer for a band called The Company She Keeps. Reinhart is generally considered one of the most popular American Idol contestants. She is the only Season 10 contestant who has over a million views on six of her YouTube performance videos.

Away from the singing competition show, she has done incredibly well, signing a recording deal with Interscope Records and dropping several albums that have each charted on the Billboard 200. Hopefully, she’ll do more acting as she has been brilliant in the few shows she has appeared in so far.

2
Taryn Southern

Taryn Southern no longer acts. Her last television appearance came in the sitcom Last Man Standing in 2014. Before that, she had gained prominence through shows like Guys with Kids, New Girls and Sorority Forever. Reality TV fans remember her from American Idol Season 3, in which she was part of the Top 50. She competed while she was still in school, and thanks to her great work, she received a grant to study the shamanic use of ayahuasca in Peru.

Diversifying Her Interests

Southern might have quit acting, and stopped pursuing music as a primary career, but she is busy with other endeavors. For example, she has served as an ambassador for The Geena Davis Institute for Gender in Media and has been actively engaged in production and directing. In 2019, she launched her first full-length feature documentary, I Am Human, which examined the co-evolution of the human brain and technology. The project brought her numerous accolades. As a cancer survivor, she is also heavily involved in activism.

1
Alan Ritchson

Alan Ritchson has been around for a while, but it feels like he is just getting started. He arrived with a bang, making his acting debut as a young version of Arthur Curry, aka, Aquaman on The CW superhero series Smallville. He would make an even bigger name for himself by starring in the Spike TV teen sitcom Blue Mountain State before taking on another superhero role, Hank Hall, aka, Hawk, in Titans. Now he is Jack Reacher, and we wonder what’s stopping the writers of the Prime Video show from putting him inside a bar and having him do a karaoke session.

Jack Reacher on the Mic

Ritchson’s American Idol audition tape is available online and it’s quite something. He might have been sad about not going far in the competition, but it was all for the better. A competition door closed, but years later, Ritchson would be banging other doors open as Jack Reacher. Still, it would be great to see him signing again. Probably not good for his street cred, but all action stars have let out their goofy side at some point in their careers. It wouldn’t hurt for Ritchson to do the same.
