As a political enthusiast who has been following the dramatic shifts in American politics closely, I find myself deeply moved by the upcoming documentary “The Last Republican,” starring Adam Kinzinger. Having witnessed the tumultuous journey of Congressman Kinzinger from Illinois, it’s fascinating to see his story unfold on the big screen, particularly as he bravely broke ranks with his Republican colleagues to stand against Donald Trump.
One of the most talked-about documentaries at the Toronto International Film Festival, titled “The Last Republican,” centered around Adam Kinzinger, was directed by Steve Pink (known for “Hot Tub Time Machine“). This film tells the story of the former Illinois Congressman who defied his Republican peers to criticize Donald Trump and become a member of the January 6th committee. The movie’s significance has grown significantly following Trump’s recent election win last month.
In this recently released sneak peek, Representative Adam Kinzinger discusses his reasons for taking action. “It’s not about adhering to a particular political ideology,” he explains. “It’s about defying everything you’ve ever identified with because of a boundary that simply cannot be crossed,” he adds, as the trailer showcases both the serious and humorous facets of his journey.
At TIFF, he shared with THR that politics wasn’t the main theme of the movie, which is also produced by documentary filmmaker Jason Kohn. He explained, “When I spoke with Steve and his team, their focus was on the human aspect – what is the toll on you and your future child?
As a fervent admirer, I’m excited to share that although filmed prior to the 2024 campaign results, the re-emergence of Trump has undeniably amplified the film’s relevance. Representative Kinzinger is anticipated to serve as a pivotal figure of resistance in a choir that has generally remained mute in the post-election weeks. Notably, major streaming platforms and movie distributors have exhibited little interest in a film critical of the incoming president-elect, choosing not to acquire it. However, “The Last Republican” will make its way into the public eye through the documentary collective MCDC, founded by Pink.
The film will debut at New York City’s Film Forum on January 3, with plans to show it in more cities in the upcoming months.
