As a former TV critic, I can’t help but reminisce about the old days on “The Voice,” where Blake Shelton and Adam Levine would exchange barbs like nobody’s business – a spectacle that came to an end when Maroon 5’s frontman departed in 2019, followed by ol’ Blake in 2023. While those moments have their charm, the truth is, after a while, viewers grew weary of their jibes. Was it ever too much? Well, Levine shared a tale from his friendly rivalry with Shelton, even discussing who among them was more affected by the insults.
For Season 27, airing now on the 2025 TV schedule, Adam Levine is back in his iconic Big Red Chair. With his numerous victories, it’s exciting to see him rejoin the panel once more. However, some fans are left wanting more as they yearn for a complete Blake-and-Adam reunion. In a recent chat on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Levine shared insights about his relationship with Blake Shelton. He mentioned that when ‘The Voice’ first started in 2011, he and Shelton even contemplated the extent of their on-air rivalry.
From the start, we clicked instantly and began playfully teasing one another. Then, a particular incident occurred when we were in our respective trailers. I asked, “Is there any boundary you wouldn’t cross? Do you ever feel there’s a line that shouldn’t be crossed?
It’s quite commendable of Adam Levine to set limits on his banter with Blake Shelton regarding when their jokes should end, as they tend to become less amusing. In turn, Shelton provided a fitting reply that aligns with his character, and Levine carried on by saying:
As a film critic, let me share my thoughts: He asserted, “Friend, strike me with all your might; you’ll never be too forceful.” Indeed, the movie lived up to this promise. I must admit, I reacted more delicately than him.
It’s understandable that hearing about it, Adam Levine seemed to feel the criticisms more deeply than Blake Shelton. After all, Blake appeared much more relaxed compared to the fiery Adam, who often found himself in the limelight for controversies on The Voice.
As a dedicated movie buff, I can’t help but ponder if Blake Shelton’s world took a slightly different turn when he entered into a relationship with his fellow coach, Gwen Stefani. One of the most debated topics seemed to be Adam Levine being left out of their wedding invitations. He playfully threatened to gate crash the ceremony and object to the union, which honestly, makes me understand why Stefani might’ve chosen to discard that invitation.
During Adam Levine’s sexting scandal in 2023, there were whispers that Gwen Stefani asked her husband to keep a distance from the Maroon 5 frontman. However, only a few months after, Adam Levine made an appearance on The Voice to support Blake Shelton during his final episode.
As per Adam Levine, the initial four coaches on “The Voice” developed a strong connection during their shared journey of the chair-turning process. In simpler terms, Adam stated that the first four coaches became closely knit while going through the chair-turning experience together.
Initially, when we launched The Voice, it was a complete enigma to everyone. Now, it’s well-known and thriving, but in the beginning, it was chaotic and uncertain. To be precise, they placed these four individuals in chairs that could spin around. This aspect is common knowledge now, but at the time, we were all taken aback, thinking, ‘This is strange.’ However, it made us feel like we were part of a collective team.
We’ve been following it for 14 years and through 27 seasons, so we definitely have an idea about the show. The new coaches have a strong connection, and Kelsea Ballerini has become quite the rival to Adam Levine. However, I doubt anything will compare to the dynamic between him and Blake Shelton.
Don’t miss out! Find out if Adam will secure his fourth win as The Voice resumes at 8 p.m. ET every Monday on NBC, or catch it the following day with a Peacock subscription for streaming.
