As a movie reviewer with a soft spot for sitcoms and comedies, I must say that the upcoming series “Mr. Throwback” on Peacock has piqued my interest like a Curry three-pointer. With Adam Pally, the lovable character from “Happy Endings” and “The Mindy Project,” teaming up with NBA legend Stephen Curry, this show promises to be nothing short of a slam dunk.

Fan-loved actors from “Happy Endings” and “The Mindy Project”, Adam Pally, attributes an unexpected turn of events for the kickoff of his fresh comedy mockumentary series titled “Mr. Throwback”, now streaming on Peacock. In a recent conversation with MovieWeb, Pally explained:

“Steph’s incredibly gifted spouse, Ayesha, previously starred in a series on HBO titled ‘About Last Night’, and my wife and I were also featured. Alongside us, David Caspe, known for ‘Happy Endings’, and his partner, Casey Wilson, graced the show. We all connected in a delightfully lively manner, and the following day, their producer reached out to us as they seemed to understand our desire to collaborate again. They asked, ‘Do you have any ideas for a new show?’ To which we replied, ‘Give us a moment.’ “

The subsequent call was made to the writers Matthew and Daniel Libman from Happy Endings and Champaign ILL, who Pally considers “the two funniest writers in television.” This group presented a series concept to Stephen Curry, which proved successful. Now, Pally, Caspe, and Curry jointly hold executive producer roles in this show, marking Curry’s debut in scripted television. Ego Nwodim (Saturday Night Live) and Ayden Mayeri (Jackpot!) are also part of the cast.

Showing a Different Side of Stephen Curry

In a new venture, Mr. Throwback follows an unlucky sports memorabilia seller aiming for redemption as he reconnects with his childhood basketball teammate, NBA star Stephen Curry. Earlier, Curry expressed eagerness about delving into scripted comedy, stating: “I am thrilled to enter this realm and believe viewers will enjoy seeing a unique portrayal of myself that they haven’t encountered before. I hope the audience identifies with the characters and their struggles throughout the show.”

“As a movie enthusiast, I can’t wait to witness an unprecedented portrayal of Stephen as a jovial, extraordinarily skilled, almost divine athlete. This man is likely in the top echelon of hand-eye coordination and intelligence, swiftly grasping patterns, jokes, and situational humor within mere hours. Above all, he seems like an absolute joy to be around.”

Apart from acknowledging Curry’s natural comedic rhythm, Pally was equally excited to renew ties with Caspe, who masterminded the beloved three-season ABC sitcom “Happy Endings.” This show had a dedicated fanbase, starring Pally, Damon Wayans Jr., Eliza Coupe, Elisha Cuthbert, Zachary Knighton, and Casey Wilson. Nowadays, Pally and Wilson co-host the “Happy Endings Podcast,” where they engage in lively discussions with the creators, cast members, and writers of the old sitcom.

“Pally expressed his joy about collaborating with Caspe once more, stating, ‘We genuinely care for each other.’ Working together always reminds us of our time on Happy Endings, where we would glance around in disbelief, thinking, ‘They’re letting us do this?’ We felt that way every day, and perhaps that’s the magic ingredient. You need to appreciate the people you work with daily to create something enjoyable.”

While we’re waiting, keep your eyes peeled for “The 4:30 Movie,” directed by none other than Kevin Smith, known for his masterpieces like “Clerks” and “Chasing Amy.” My friend, Pally, is part of the hilarious cast alongside Genesis Rodriguez from “The Umbrella Academy,” Justin Long from “Goosebumps,” Diedrich Bader from “Batman: Caped Crusader,” Siena Agudong from TV’s “Resident Evil,” and other remarkable actors. This film takes us back to the 1980s, following a group of teens on an exciting day of movie-hopping. As Pally puts it, “It’s going to be a blast!”

As a fan from Jersey, I can tell you that getting a call from Kevin Smith was like striking gold! Growing up in my small town, opportunities like this were few and far between. But when Kevin called, there was no hesitation – I dropped everything and answered. I don’t want to give too much away, but let me just say that the project is filled with some of the funniest people out there. Kevin has always been a hero of mine, and he gave me a once-in-a-lifetime chance to prove myself. And boy, did I take full advantage of it! So, stay tuned for more updates. In the meantime, don’t miss out on Mr. Throwback, which you can stream exclusively on Peacock starting August 8. Check out the trailer below: [insert link to trailer]
