Adam Sandler Says He Had to Rewrite ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ After Carl Weathers’ Death

Adam Sandler said he had to rewrite Happy Gilmore 2 following Carl Weathers‘ death.

Actor and comedian Adam Sandler, set to reprise his character from the 1996 sports comedy “Happy Gilmore,” shared with Collider that the original film’s co-star Chubbs (played by Ted Knight) was initially planned to return for the upcoming sequel. Sadly, Knight passed away last year at the age of 76 before this could happen.

There was a significant shift for us. According to Sandler, Carl Weathers played a crucial role. We used to discuss our scenes with Carl, and we were thrilled about it, but unfortunately, Carl passed away. This necessitated rewriting much of our script, even altering the storyline itself. We paid tribute to Chubbs’ greatness in the movie by including several subtle references.

Initially, Sandler mentioned that Chubbs played a more significant role in the early drafts of the sequel’s script. In our initial concept, he even had a child character. Chubbs frequently appeared in my dreams, and this son was upset with Happy for causing his father’s demise.

In the 1996 movie “Happy Gilmore”, Chubbs, a professional golfer who was compelled to retire after his hand was bitten off by an alligator, appeared as a character. To replace his lost hand, he used a wooden prosthesis.

The sequel to “Happy Gilmore,” titled “Happy Gilmore 2,” will be released on Netflix on July 25, with direction by Kyle Newacheck. Some familiar faces from the first film return, including Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and Ben Stiller. Additionally, new cast members include Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, Benny Safdie, Travis Kelce, and Kym Whitley.

After Weathers passed away, Sandler expressed his tribute for his late co-star on social media. “An exceptional individual, excellent father, superb actor, and remarkable athlete,” he stated then. “Always a joy to be with him. Intelligent beyond measure, loyal to the core, hilarious in every way. His sons meant the world to him. What an outstanding person!
