As someone who has been through the rollercoaster that was the Adult Swim Yule Log saga, I can confidently say that I’ve never experienced anything quite like it. The first one caught me off-guard with its clever twist on a seemingly mundane yule log program, and the second one took things to a whole new level by invading the sacrosanct territory of Hallmark Christmas movies.
In the year 2022, it seemed that Adult Swim was just airing a traditional yule log program, with a stationary camera capturing the comforting sight of a crackling fire during the holiday season. However, as the log continued to burn, viewers soon realized that all was not as it appeared, and what started as a standard program transformed into a full-blown horror movie on television. And things only grew stranger from there. The unexpected twist turned out to be a delightful surprise for horror enthusiasts, who enjoyed the film’s surreal and absurd elements.
In the same vein, the inventive spirit responsible for the initial film and some familiar faces are returning for a follow-up titled “Adult Swim Yule Log 2: Branching Out”. This time around, the lethal yuletide log penetrates traditional Hallmark Christmas flicks, resulting in an unexpected fusion of horror genres that fans didn’t realize they were craving.
Casper Kelly, the creative mind behind both ‘Too Many Cooks’ and the ‘Mandy’ Cheddar Goblin commercial, recently shared insights about his inspiration for the latest project, which struck him during a movie club viewing of the Hallmark film ‘Holiday in Handcuffs’, starring Mario Lopez. According to Kelly…
What struck me was that I initially held the movie in low regard, yet it managed to tug at my heartstrings. Subsequently, we watched several more films. I ended up watching “Falling for Christmas,” the Lindsay Lohan Netflix movie, which, though not a typical Hallmark production, still piqued my curiosity. Similarly, I watched “A California Christmas.” Initially, I found myself in an odd position where I didn’t appreciate these movies, but they eventually drew me in and provided enjoyment. They left me with a warm, pleasant feeling.
Kelly Wants To Make Something Like ‘Eraserhead’ or ‘Skinamarink’
Kelly hasn’t finished the Yule Log series yet. He’s got ideas brewing for a third part, aiming to surpass its previous installments in all aspects.
I am itching, if I get to do a third one, to go very dark and very weird. Just bring it home in the darkest, weirdest way possible. I also noticed that some trilogies – not all, but some – like the original ‘
Star Wars’
or ‘
Back to the Future
,’ make the middle one their darkest entry. So I thought to maybe go lighter on the middle one – go against the norm – but then go really dark for the last one.
Beyond the realm of murder-centric scripts, Kelly possesses concepts for movies that could captivate companies such as A24 or Neon, potentially leading to wide theatrical showings.
Currently, I’m collaborating with BoulderLight Pictures, the team behind ‘Barbarian,’ on a film project we’re seeking financial backing for. My passion for cinema is burning brightly! I’m eager to create numerous films, but in my downtime, I plan to launch a Kickstarter campaign for a low-budget, avant-garde film. Think ‘Skinamarink,’ ‘Eraserhead,’ or something reminiscent of ‘Let’s All Go to the World’s Fair.’ While Adult Swim offers me creative freedom, there’s still an audience I aim to cater to. A Kickstarter project would provide the liberty to experiment truly, which is something I’m keen on pursuing.
I hope that Kelly’s dreams become reality, and he manages to create something mind-blowingly impressive in the future.
Adult Swim Yule Log 2: Branchin’ Out is now available to stream via Max.
