AFI Fest Adds ‘Heretic’ and ‘Maria’ to 2024 Lineup

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for both virtual and cinematic worlds, I can hardly contain my excitement about this year’s AFI Fest lineup! The prospect of watching Hugh Grant in “Heretic” and Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas is already sending shivers down my spine. The fact that these screenings will take place at the historic TCL Chinese Theatre just adds an extra layer of allure.

For the upcoming AFI Fest, the team is steadily announcing their chosen films before unveiling the complete schedule.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but be thrilled about the fresh additions to the lineup, dubbed as grand debuts on the red carpet. These include “Heretic,” headlined by the charming Hugh Grant, directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, and “Maria,” a captivating production from Pablo Larraín featuring the talented Angelina Jolie portraying the legendary opera singer.

First up is the premiere of “Heretic” in Los Angeles on October 24th, followed by “Maria” on October 26th. Both films will be screened at Hollywood’s iconic TCL Chinese Theatre. “Heretic”, set for release by A24 on November 8th, tells the story of two missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) who are compelled to demonstrate their faith after knocking on the wrong door and encountering a sinister individual. Directed by Larraín, “Maria” stars Angelina Jolie as Callas and chronicles her last days in Paris. This Netflix release is scheduled for this fall and also features Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

The American Film Institute (AFI) announced on Thursday the films that will be screened as part of their special selection. These movies include Andrea Arnold’s “Bird” starring Barry Keoghan, Rachel Morrison’s “The Fire Inside” featuring Ryan Destiny and Brian Tyree Henry, Walter Salles’ “I’m Still Here” with Fernanda Torres and Selton Paiva, Marielle Heller’s “Nightbitch” starring Amy Adams, Justin Kurzel’s “The Order” starring Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, and Jurnee Smollett, Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain” with himself and Kieran Culkin, Pedro Almodóvar’s Venice Film Festival winner “The Room Next Door” starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, Charlie McDowell’s “The Summer Book” featuring Anders Danielsen Lie and Glenn Close, and William Goldenberg’s “Unstoppable” with Jharrel Jerome, Jennifer Lopez, Don Cheadle, Michael Peña, and Bobby Cannavale.

Todd Hitchcock, head of AFI Fest and the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, announced that this year’s selection for the special screenings section comprises internationally acclaimed movies, beautiful masterpieces, and uplifting crowd favorites. He expressed excitement about sharing these remarkable and influential films with audiences at AFI Fest, right in the heart of Los Angeles.
