AFI Fest to Open With World Premiere of ‘Music by John Williams’ Documentary

As a lifelong fan of cinematic masterpieces, I am thrilled to learn about the upcoming world premiere of Laurent Bouzereau’s documentary, “Music by John Williams,” at the AFI Fest 2024. Growing up in a small village far from Hollywood, my access to films was limited, but my love for their soundtracks, particularly those composed by the legendary maestro, was boundless. I remember saving up allowance to buy vinyl records of John Williams’ scores, listening to them long before the movies themselves graced our local cinema screens.

AFI Fest will feature a lot of music by John Williams.

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to announce that Laurent Bouzereau’s latest documentary, “Music by John Williams,” will make its grand debut on the opening night of the 2024 Los Angeles Film Festival. This event is not just any festival; it’s the 2024 edition, and it’s going to be a spectacle thanks to its new exclusive sponsor, Canva, with Fiji Water lending extra support. The 38th AFI Fest commences on October 23 and continues through October 27 at Hollywood’s iconic TCL Chinese Theatres. I can hardly wait!

Originating from Lucasfilm, Amblin Documentaries, and Imagine Documentaries, “Music by John Williams” is advertised as a thorough exploration of the life and illustrious career of the highly acclaimed composer who has been nominated for 54 Oscars and won five. In 2016, he received the AFI Life Achievement Award, making him the first composer to be honored with this distinction. At 92 years old, Williams boasts a vast number of credits on his resume (hundreds) that cannot all be listed here. However, he earned his Oscars for “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Jaws,” “Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope,” “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” and “Schindler’s List.”

Raised in France, I found that the vinyl soundtracks I purchased preceded most American movies that wouldn’t be released for months later. It was John Williams’ compositions that instantly resonated with me; his music not only ignited my passion for music but also showed me as a young child the profound impact a score could have on cinematic narrative. This tale needed to be shared, not just because it highlights one of the greatest composers ever, but because of the underlying message about preserving orchestral music and musicians. (Bouzereau’s words)

Our documentary team secured in-depth conversations with a variety of influential figures such as Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Kate Capshaw, Gustavo Dudamel, J.J. Abrams, Chris Martin, Ron Howard, Chris Columbus, George Lucas, Itzhak Perlman, Lawrence Kasdan, Yo-Yo Ma, Ke Huy Quan, James Mangold, Alan Silvestri, David Newman, Thomas Newman, Seth MacFarlane, Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Branford Marsalis. The project was produced by Spielberg, Howard, Kennedy, Marshall, Brian Grazer, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, Sara Bernstein, Justin Wilkes, Meredith Kaulfers, Bouzereau, with Markus Keith and Michael Rosenberg serving as executive producers.

“Bob Gazzale, head of AFI, praised John Williams as a legendary American figure who has left an enduring and universal mark on the world. Expressing our excitement about hosting the film’s premiere would be an understatement; it’s almost like we’re ecstatic beyond belief. However, this joy wouldn’t reach such heights without the enchanting melodies of ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.'”

After making its debut, “John Williams’ Music” is set for a restricted cinema screening prior to its premiere on Disney+ starting November 1st. The complete schedule for the AFI Fest will be unveiled on October 1st.
