As someone who has long been captivated by documentaries that shed light on global conflicts and injustices, I can confidently assert that “No Other Land” is one of the most impactful and essential documentaries to grace our screens this year. The film’s unflinching portrayal of life under Israeli occupation in the West Bank serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for freedom faced by Palestinians, a struggle that resonates deeply with me, given my own experiences navigating complex geopolitical landscapes.
No Other Land can lay claim to be one of the most important documentary of the year.
In a timely and impactful manner, as described by film critic Lovia Gyarkye in her Berlin review, the movie offers a heart-wrenching depiction of life under Israeli occupation in the West Bank. Over the course of five years, a group of Palestinian and Israeli activists collaborated to create this film, capturing the gradual demolition of the West Bank village of Masafer Yatta. This village represents numerous homes and communities that have been destroyed to make room for Israeli settlers.
Filmed in a raw, straightforward style devoid of sensationalism, No Other Land presents a strong ethical argument against the occupation of the West Bank. It also harshly criticizes major Western countries, particularly the United States, for their ongoing military and financial support to Israel, while ignoring the mistreatment of Palestinians.
I was thrilled to attend the debut of this remarkable documentary in Berlin. Not only did it snag the best documentary prize and the audience award in the Panorama section, but it also sparked a heated discussion. Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham, one of the film’s directors, spoke out against what he termed as the “Apartheid-like conditions” on the West Bank. This meant that his Palestinian co-directors were denied the same mobility and voting rights that I, as an Israeli, enjoyed.
It seems that the prospect of additional controversy or pushback from pro-Israeli groups has apparently deterred American distributors, as the movie “No Other Land” has gained popularity in Europe but remains undistributed domestically.
Viewers ought to show more boldness. “No Other Land” steers clear of polemics or propaganda, and it doesn’t provide simplistic resolutions. However, amidst tales of ruin and despair, the movie also presents a vision of a brighter future, where Israelis and Palestinians, similar to the directors of this documentary, can collaborate in pursuit of justice and liberation. Cinetic Media and Autlook Film Sales are responsible for managing international sales for the film.
