As an ardent fan of Bollywood classics, I can’t help but reminisce about the timeless comedy “Andaz Apna Apna.” It’s fascinating to hear director Rajkumar Santoshi‘s insights into the film’s rocky start at the box office. Being a movie enthusiast who has watched this masterpiece countless times, I can attest that it’s not just a love story; it’s a rollercoaster ride of hilarious chaos!
Notable director Rajkumar Santoshi recently discussed the box office success of his iconic comedy “Andaz Apna Apna,” and mentioned that the promotions for the movie could have been better. This beloved cult classic, starring A-list actors like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, and Karisma Kapoor, has left a lasting impact on audiences. Santoshi also shared that he’s currently working on a new comedy project, provisionally named “Adaa Apni Apni.
During an interview with Doordarshan, film director Rajkumar Santoshi reminisced about the early response towards Andaz Apna Apna, mentioning that it encountered difficulties because of inadequate promotion and misunderstandings regarding its movie category.
Santoshi clarified that viewers found the movie surprising because they thought it was going to be a love story like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Dil, or Maine Pyar Kiya, but it turned out to be a comedy instead. He believed the lack of success at the box office could be due to inexperienced distributors who weren’t effective in promoting the film adequately.
Additionally, he disclosed that there wasn’t any grand launch or publicity event since both Aamir Khan and Salman Khan were away from the city when their movie was released.
Santoshi pointed out that although people who saw the movie found it enjoyable, the expansion of its popularity via word-of-mouth was slowed down as theaters started taking it off screens.
He refrained from calling it a flop, stating, “It wasn’t a flop, but it didn’t meet our expectations initially. By the time it started gaining popularity, it was taken off the screens because the distributors lost faith in its potential.”
Regarding a potential follow-up, Santoshi hinted at a venture called “Adaa Apni Apni,” likening it to the humor of “Andaz Apna Apna.” He admitted it was an innovative attempt but promised it would be enjoyable. When inquired if it would be a direct sequel, he responded, “It’s premature to decide. We’ll have to wait and see.
