The notion of Austin Butler portraying Patrick Bateman in a new adaptation of “American Psycho” was intriguing, despite there being other talented actors to choose from, given that it’s widely regarded as one of the finest films from the 2000s. However, Bret Easton Ellis, the author of the original novel, appears to contradict these reports about Butler’s involvement, and claims that the widespread speculation surrounding his casting is merely a fabrication or misinformation.
The buzz surrounding the 2000 remake of American Psycho, with Luca Guadagnino at the helm (having directed Challengers/Suspiria), generated immediate excitement. When Austin Butler was subsequently chosen to star, the anticipation among fans soared, spreading like wildfire across social media. However, in a recent episode of The Bret Easton Ellis podcast, Ellis himself cast doubt on the project, claiming it might just be a rumor or “fake news.” According to Bloody Disgusting, Ellis has reportedly received information that no contracts have been signed yet.
It seems like rumors are circulating, but based on my information, it’s not confirmed that Austin Butler has signed a contract to play Patrick Bateman. Neither he nor Luca, the presumed director, Scott Burns (screenwriter), have any official deals yet. These reports might just be speculative or misleading, possibly aimed at gauging public reaction.
From what it appears, the author and screenwriter seem quite confident that no negotiations have taken place, or at least not yet, regarding the project they’re discussing. It will surely be intriguing to observe the thoughts of the 60-year-old individual and how Butler and others react. I fervently hope that a remake is underway and progress is being made slowly, or if not, that someone clarifies whether or not the writer’s statements are accurate.
Despite any conflicting information, it’s clear that Butler has been kept quite occupied. Last year, the rising talent graced our screens in “Dune 2,” one of the top films of 2024. Currently, he’s immersed in preparations for a brand new racing movie titled “American Speed,” co-starring Tom Holland. Given its title, it promises to be as exhilarating as it sounds.
Currently, Ellis is engaged in developing scripts for two different projects. One is titled “The Shards“, which is being transformed into a series based on his book by the same name. The other project is named “Relapse“, and Joseph Quinn was previously attached to it. However, a scheduling issue with an upcoming Beatles film has arisen, causing him to withdraw from this project. Notably, “Relapse” will mark Ellis’ first directorial effort, making it intriguing to see his transition into the director’s chair.
Regardless of whether it’s truth or falsehood, I hope Austin Butler will indeed portray Bateman. The casting choice has generated quite a buzz for a good reason, and it will be intriguing to see how the author of American Psycho explains this decision and what reactions it may provoke.
