As a die-hard fan with a heart full of pop culture trivia and a mind that never forgets a movie scene, I must admit that the final season of The Umbrella Academy was like a treasure hunt for me! The showrunner’s nod to Easter eggs was not just a delightful surprise but a thrilling challenge.

Being a diehard fan of “The Umbrella Academy” on Netflix, I’m utterly disheartened that the series concluded after just four seasons. Showrunner Steve Blackman did an exceptional job in maintaining the essence of the comics while also injecting delightful surprises for us fans to catch. Just recently, when I marathoned the fourth and final season that dropped on the 2024 TV schedule, I was thrilled to spot what seemed like subtle references to some iconic movie moments from Hollywood’s golden age.

The Umbrella Academy often draws inspiration from popular culture. For instance, the second season was set in the 1960s and focused on the assassination of JFK and the ensuing conspiracies, while the hotel scenes in Season 3 bore a striking resemblance to ‘The Shining’. In a chat with Tudum, Blackman revealed several subtle references from previous Umbrella Academy seasons that were cleverly inserted into the finale of the series.

We really love to put Easter eggs into the show.

Let’s dive right in! Here are four well-known films that appear to be referenced in The Umbrella Academy’s fourth season. These include Kill Bill and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

The Little Miss Sunshine Van Scene

The narrative commences with an intriguing hint, although it’s not yet verified, appearing in Episode 2 titled “Jean and Gene”. Despite these characters, who are villains in a marriage, not making an appearance until the very end of the episode, there’s a scene that strongly resembles the movie Little Miss Sunshine.

In both the popular movie and the sci-fi television series we’re discussing, the driver of a cramped three-row van carrying an unruly family is instructed to stop. But unlike in the Umbrella Academy, it isn’t due to someone experiencing a panic attack; instead, all the passengers have been unwillingly given marigold and are feeling quite ill.

The Trench Coat Scene From Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

In one of the top ’80s films, Ferris Bueller manages some truly remarkable feats during his supposed absence from school, such as deceiving his principal and secretly taking his girlfriend out. A memorable moment from this movie shows Sloane and Principal Rooney standing outside together when a bus drives off, unveiling Ferris on the opposite side of the street, dressed in a trench coat to disguise himself.

In much the same manner as the television series “The Umbrella Academy” in its episode titled “End of the Beginning,” a bus rolls past to unveil Diego and Luther, both clad in raincoats, standing on the pavement. It seems unlikely that this was mere chance in their choice of clothing!

The Grave Scene From Kill Bill Vol. 2

In this game, I found myself entombed alive in a chilling place called Pet Sematary – talk about a grim situation! With no other alternatives left, I summoned my inner Uma Thurman’s resilience and resourcefulness to dig my way out of that tomb. No room for speculation here; the dialogue itself confirmed it!

In our preferred scene starring the unconventional psychic, instead of using a flashlight, he employs a lighter. Regarding the rest of the sequence, it remains identical, with Klaus meticulously arranging his hand and delivering a blow to the wood, in a manner reminiscent of Black Mamba’s style. As a devotee of the movie “Kill Bill,” I was thrilled by this deliberate homage!

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Elevator Scene

Every Marvel fan knows the famous elevator scene from Winter Soldier in which Captain America beats up an elevator full of S.H.I.E.L.D. henchmen with his hands tied.

In a similar manner to how Captain America would handle such a situation, The Umbrella Academy reenacted a scene where Luther poses a danger to the secretive group that has infiltrated the CIA. This organization dispatches several men to eliminate him inside an elevator, but just like Steve Rogers, Luther emerges victorious with all of them knocked out on the floor beneath him. As a fan of Captain America, I immediately recognized this classic scenario. Truly iconic!

I really enjoyed discovering these unsanctioned references and intentional Easter eggs placed by the crew, particularly in the final scene where all the old characters appeared. While I may need to watch it again to catch them all, I might even rewatch the entire series to find all the Easter eggs related to “Bennifer”, which refers to something specific understood among my friends, not a celebrity relationship.

Instead, give it a go and hunt down the references and Easter Eggs on your own by streaming Season 4 of The Umbrella Academy with a Netflix membership.
