After Denzel Washington's Viral Black Panther 3 Comments, I'm Surprised He Changed His Mind After These Former Quotes About Being 'Beyond The Tights Years'

As a long-time admirer of Denzel Washington’s illustrious career, I find myself both amazed and amused by his decision to step into the world of superheroes with Black Panther 3. Having spent nearly five decades in the industry, one might expect him to be content with his impressive body of work and perhaps even considering a well-deserved retirement. Yet here we are, with Denzel Washington, at the age of 67, ready to take on the Marvel universe!

In a few days, Gladiator II will premiere on the 2024 movies schedule, and with it will come Denzel Washington’s performance as Macrinus, which is already generating chatter about his Oscar chances. Washington has also recently said that he may be close to retirement, but don’t think that means he’s leaving the filmmaking world after the Gladiator sequel. He has a handful of other projects lined up, including Ryan Coogler writing a part for him in Black Panther 3. Washington’s comments revealing his involvement in the upcoming Marvel movie went viral, but I’m surprised he decided to do this considering how he thought he was “beyond the tights years” part of his career almost a decade ago.

In the podcast episode of “60 Minutes: A Second Look” titled “The Gladiator of Acting: Denzel Washington,” a discussion between Washington and reporter Bill Whitaker from 2016 was featured. This conversation took place during the year of Washington’s films, “The Magnificent Seven” and “Fences.” During this interview, Whitaker pointed out that it seemed as though Washington had accomplished everything in his career, but hadn’t yet played a superhero. The reporter asked if Washington simply wasn’t interested in such a role, to which the actor responded:

To be honest, I’m not really sure about men’s tights, as I might be past the age where I would wear them comfortably.

In late 2016, Denzel Washington reached the age of 62, which makes it easy to comprehend his reluctance towards donning a superhero or supervillain outfit. While Michael Keaton recently revived his Batman character in “The Flash” this past year, it’s a different story for an older actor to step into such a role for the first time and struggle with the typically uncomfortable costume that is rarely designed for comfort.

Bill Whitaker remarked, “That’s where the significant financial resources are,” prompting Denzel Washington to inquire about who was making this assertion, further questioning.

Regarding those individuals who are often seen in tights, it might be more appropriate to acknowledge personal boundaries. Frankly, my present self doesn’t envision myself wearing tights, but the future is unpredictable.

As a gaming enthusiast, it’s been nearly a decade since I last donned the mantle of a superhero on the big screen in Black Panther. But now, rumors are swirling that I’m set to return for Black Panther 3, and I can hardly contain my excitement! While I’m not privy to Ryan Coogler’s plans just yet, I have a feeling this time around, I won’t be wearing the intricate, comic-book inspired costume. Instead, it seems like I might be portraying a character deeply rooted in Wakandan culture, perhaps even a figure of authority dressed in traditional attire, or perhaps an American in a business suit. Whatever the role may be, I can’t wait to see how I fit into the narrative of Black Panther 3!

As an ardent fan, I’m eagerly awaiting news about the release date for Black Panther 3, though Marvel Studios has reserved slots for two unnamed movies on February 13 and November 6, 2026. Starting this Friday, November 22, you can catch Denzel Washington in Gladiator II, while those with a Netflix subscription will also get to watch The Piano Lesson, a film he produced, on the same day.
