As a long-time fan of FBI: International, I have to say that Episode 4 of Season 4, titled “The Unwinnable War,” was a rollercoaster ride of emotions! The way Amanda Tate, played brilliantly by Christina Wolfe, stepped out of her comfort zone and took on a dangerous undercover operation was nothing short of exhilarating.
Attention: The following discussion contains plot details from the fourth episode of FBI: International’s fourth season titled “The Unwinnable War.” Proceed with caution if you haven’t watched it yet.
Weekly action unfolds on FBI: International starting its fall 2024 TV schedule resumption, featuring a premiere akin to a pilot. However, it’s not common for Amanda Tate to find herself in life-threatening situations to wrap up cases. But in “The Unwinnable War,” circumstances required Tate to use her unique abilities in the field, leading to undercover work and getting dangerously close to a highly dangerous individual. In fact, she got closer than planned by Wes. However, he presented an offer at episode’s end that could have significantly altered everything, and actress Christina Wolfe discussed Tate’s choice, her determination, and potential changes with TopMob.
In “The Unwinnable War,” Tate utilized her technological know-how and proficiency in Spanish to build a relationship with Daniel Lopez, a corrupt DEA agent who could be exposed once sufficient evidence was accumulated against him. (This episode can be streamed with a Paramount+ subscription.) However, this proximity to Lopez put Tate in a precarious situation where there was no assurance that the Fly Team could arrive in time to rescue her. Remarkably, she found a way to save herself, which so impressed Wes that he believed she was suited for field work and proposed a transfer. Yet, she declined the offer, instead focusing on her daughter playing with Tank.
During my conversation with Christina Wolfe regarding Tate’s recent return to the field after his brief appearance in Season 3, I wondered if her character might have been intrigued by Wes’ proposal, even though she swiftly rejected it. And Christina revealed that indeed, there was a moment of consideration on her part.
In simpler terms, she appears to be considering a move to field work, but when confronted with the opportunity during this case, she’s overwhelmed by gratitude for being reunited with her daughter and surviving. At that moment, she seems unwilling or unprepared to make such a transition. She initially took the job to demonstrate her capabilities in field work, which she has accomplished, and now feels content and thankful for her office position that’s safer. Additionally, she thrives in the office with her favorite technology and her team of analysts. [laughs]
After a harrowing encounter with a rogue DEA agent that almost cost me my life, I must admit, I’m cherishing every moment spent outdoors with my daughter more than ever. The thought of returning to the field is less exhilarating and more about gratitude for another day. However, just because I’ve had a brush with death doesn’t mean I’ll be holed up at Fly Team HQ forever. Wolfe made it clear that this doesn’t necessarily signify my permanent withdrawal from the action-packed fieldwork.
Deep inside, she acknowledges her true feelings. While she claims contentment with her current situation, it’s only temporary. Beneath the surface, there remains an impulsive part of her and a strong desire to excel and achieve more.
Tate not immediately jumping at the chance to start weekly European flights to apprehend criminals doesn’t imply she’s unaffected by Wes’ proposal. Given Wes’ background as a cop for ten years before ascending to FBI SSA, it’s a significant acknowledgment. Therefore, could Tate’s achievement in the field and receiving that offer serve as a confidence boost, possibly hinting at her potential transition into a field agent? Wolfe clarified this point.
Once again, I’ve found myself witnessing her shine in this gaming realm. Pride isn’t a feeling I usually associate with myself, but I must admit, it’s hard not to feel a twinge of it when I see her performance. She may not have the extensive training that others do, but she’s agile and adaptable, picking up new strategies like second nature. With each challenge we face, her confidence seems to grow stronger, making me believe she’s well on her way to becoming a true master.
I sure as hell boosted my confidence, even if it meant skirting the FBI’s red line to get near Lopez. My immediate concerns were far from my upcoming testimony when I found myself in the grimy DEA agent’s apartment, leading to an intense fight scene that could have cost me Tate’s life if I hadn’t kept pushing through the agony and managed to smash him over the head with a hefty bottle instead. As for this episode, Wolfe shared his excitement about filming some action scenes, stating:
I take great delight in performing both stunts and combat sequences. They add an exciting depth to the characters we portray, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have such a skilled stunt team at my side. Our stunt coordinator, Ken Barefield, is exceptional – it was a joy working with him. His talent not only makes each scene look thrilling and convincing, but he also excels at teaching us the complex moves and breaking them down into easy-to-understand steps. Best of all, they handle the challenging parts for me! [laughs] Truly, it’s a dream collaboration. I truly savor those action-packed scenes.
In just four episodes of FBI: International, Wes Mitchell has had more action scenes than Amanda Tate since she joined during Season 3. However, Jesse Lee Soffer, with his ten years of experience from Chicago P.D., has been a significant contributor to the fight sequences in his new series. Interestingly, Wolfe’s opportunities for filming fights have been less frequent. I expressed my appreciation for the moment when Tate landed a solid punch on Lopez to save her own life, and she agreed, expressing her enjoyment of such action scenes as well.
Absolutely, you’re right on the money! She certainly stands up for herself in this situation. Far from being a damsel in distress, she exhibits a strong, independent character, and I appreciate that quality of hers.
In the upcoming episodes of FBI: International Season 4, we’ll have to wait and see when Tate might return to duty. However, there is still ample time left in this season for more exciting developments. Don’t forget to catch the latest installments every Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on CBS, sandwiched between FBI Season 7 at 8 p.m. ET and FBI: Most Wanted at 10 p.m. ET. You can also watch these episodes the day after they air on Paramount+, or stream the first three seasons of International with a Peacock subscription right now.
