After Filming Grosse Pointe Garden Society’s ‘Sex Schedule’ Storyline, Jocko Sims Shared What He Was ‘A Little Afraid Of’ In The Final Cut

As a movie enthusiast, beware: the following contains spoilers for the fifth episode of NBC’s Grosse Pointe Garden Society titled “Pollination.” You can catch it right now if you have a Peacock subscription.

In the upcoming episode of “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” titled “Pollination,” there are some heated happenings among the show’s romantic couples and characters, which could spell trouble for Birdie and Joel, create tension for Brett in his love triangle, and put Doug and Alice in a precarious position following last week’s preview. The most dramatic events, however, stem from Catherine’s attempts to reignite her relationship with Tucker. Ahead of the episode, “Pollination,” Jocko Sims, who starred on “New Amsterdam,” spoke exclusively with TopMob to offer further insights into his and Aja Naomi King’s characters’ storylines.

It became apparent that Tucker’s nonchalance regarding Catherine’s affair was more feigned than real, especially considering his genuine irritation over her attempt to establish a planned romantic schedule, as Jocko Sims puts it. However, his apparently thoughtful act of installing smoke detectors everywhere wasn’t just for safety; he secretly placed cameras to monitor Catherine and prevent any future affairs within their home. Impressively, Catherine managed to turn Tucker’s distant vigil into an opportunity.

During my conversation with Sims regarding the Grosse Pointe Garden Society, he shared his thoughts on Catherine trying to rekindle things with Tucker.

They strive to unravel the mystery of their situation. Yet, they seem to adhere to a romantic timetable, which strikes one as odd, doesn’t it? Moreover, they tune into relationship podcasts and aim to apply the advice from those shows. [laughs] Catherine is particularly keen on following the rules. I recall that now. To him, this approach can be somewhat irritating, but she believes it’s a means to regain our former bond or reach the place we should have ended up. Boy, I’m excited!

Jocko Sims has previously been involved in unusual TV romances through shows like New Amsterdam and his character’s exploration of polyamory. However, the trials Tucker is facing on Grosse Pointe Garden Society are unlike anything Dr. Reynolds experienced before. I mentioned to the actor that the first four episodes of NBC’s new Sunday night series have made it clear that a “love-making schedule” was indeed what viewers might anticipate from Catherine’s character, and he replied:

Absolutely, I previously mentioned my belief that Aja’s portrayal of the character Catherine could become a legendary TV performance due to her skillful and consistent acting. There are forthcoming scenes where she truly embodies Catherine, and it’s nothing short of remarkable.

Aja Naomi King received heartfelt commendation from her screen partner! Similar to how Tucker showed a sinister side in “Pollination” after we learned he orchestrated Gary’s kidnapping and assault, Catherine displayed her determination in concealing the body during the flash-forwards. Unfortunately, she had to relinquish a bracelet that might link her and the other three co-conspirators to the murder, but it also highlighted her eagerness to hide their criminal act.

For Jocko Sims, an interesting aspect of the episode was a particular scene featuring Aja Naomi King, which turned out to be much more amusing when viewed on screen compared to its initial filming. He discussed this by saying:

In one specific instance, we find ourselves genuinely chuckling, perhaps even at a hint of her discomfort, which provides a welcome respite from the heavy tension between them. This scene stands out because, aside from the instances you’ve pointed out, the topic has been quite grave. However, something unexpected triggers him to burst out laughing uncontrollably. As an actor, I’m somewhat apprehensive about how this will unfold on screen, as forced laughter rarely feels genuine. On occasion, I found myself feigning laughter only for it to feel inauthentic. Yet, her performance managed to make me laugh genuinely, and I hope the director selects those takes for the final cut.

In our previous conversation about “Pollination,” the actor may have been referring to the bedroom scene where Tucker was laughing at Catherine’s on-set embarrassment caused by their housekeepers interrupting her on-camera peep show. The scene wasn’t exactly a comedy, but it did provide some amusement for Tucker before things took a turn for the worse in their conversation.

From my perspective as a movie critic, I didn’t find any inauthenticity in the scenes shared between Jocko Sims and Aja Naomi King – here’s hoping he’s pleased with the takes that made it to the final edit. The series is still in production of its first season, with Sims himself confirming he’s yet to receive the script for the finale. But with fingers crossed, we can’t help but anticipate some renewal news from NBC. In the meantime, don’t miss out on the sneak peek for the next episode!

There might be a change in the future of the Grosse Pointe Garden Society as NBC is shifting it from its Sunday night slot in April to airing on Friday nights. Typically, shows aren’t moved to Fridays because they tend not to be successful and have long-lasting futures. However, given that it’s reportedly doing well streaming, there’s a chance it could receive the Law & Order: Organized Crime treatment and be renewed for Peacock instead.

In simple terms, there’s only one more episode left to watch on Sunday at 10 p.m. Eastern Time on March 30th, after which the show will be airing every Friday from April 4th onwards.
