After Getting Backlash For Supporting James Gunn’s Superman, Suicide Squad’s Director Responds Online

As a seasoned critic who’s witnessed the rise and fall of countless superheroes on the silver screen, I must say that David Ayer’s journey through the DC Universe is as captivating as any blockbuster tale. His unwavering commitment to his vision for “Suicide Squad” and his support for other DC filmmakers like James Gunn, despite the backlash he’s faced, is nothing short of commendable.

Around ten years ago, David Ayer’s vision for “Suicide Squad,” the third film in the DC Extended Universe timeline, was released, but as time has shown, the final product deviated significantly from his original concept. Despite advocating for the release of what’s been called the “Ayer Cut” (though he no longer actively campaigns for this), Ayer has also expressed support for other DC media projects, such as James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” reboot, which is slated for a summer release in 2025. Regrettably, Ayer encountered criticism for his endorsement of this forthcoming DC movie, and the backlash was so intense that he felt compelled to address it online.

It seems that the “Release the Ayer Cut” movement, initially spearheaded by David Ayer, inadvertently clashed with the debut of Creature Commandos, the first DC Universe project on the 2024 TV schedule. As the highly-anticipated first trailer for Superman was about to be released, Ayer took to X (previously known as Twitter) to express his hope that there would be no campaigning during the premiere of this much-awaited preview, stating:

It wasn’t until the last Ayer cut campaign that I discovered James was releasing Creature Commandos. The upcoming Superman trailer is about to be released, and there are plans for another campaign related to my Skwad version. As a filmmaker, I want to support other creators. I can hardly wait to watch the trailer, and I’ve heard it’s going to be amazing. I simply wanted to express that avoiding Thursday for any promotions would be ideal. I appreciate everyone listening to me. Essentially, I’m in a delicate situation here, just going along with things as I hear them. 🙏🏻

As a fervent admirer of David Ayer’s work, it’s understandable that we all yearn for his unique take on Suicide Squad to see the light of day, similar to how Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League was released. However, he also wants to lend a hand in promoting the upcoming Superman trailer, making it the primary DC discussion point for Thursday. It seems some folks didn’t appreciate him expressing this wish, prompting him to clarify in another post:

Dear One, if debating over backing another filmmaker feels perplexing to me, then I’m utterly at a loss. As a child, my upbringing was filled with hardships. My dearest companions were comic books. They comforted me and kept me company when nobody else did. Batman resonated deeply with the wounded part of me. Superman’s optimism served as a model for viewing the world without shadows. I eagerly anticipate the release of Jamie’s trailer, to say the least. Honesty compels me to express my excitement. I am equally thrilled about seeing his film. I wholeheartedly believe he has excelled. The same simple optimism that Superman embodies is evident in his work. At this moment, the child within me yearns for that light. If being enamored with this makes me a villain, so be it. I choose to ignore what I can control and accept what I cannot. For now, I shall retreat from all this chaos for a while.

Despite many supporters yearning for the return of the DCEU, it’s clear that this is no longer an option. It’s unfortunate for Henry Cavill’s Superman, who was set to appear more often after his cameo in Black Adam, but we’re now in a new era within the DC Universe, with David Corenswet portraying Superman in this continuity. Director David Ayer, like many others, is excited about the upcoming Superman trailer. His affection for the character of Superman, often referred to as Kryptonian, dates back to his childhood. It’s perfectly fine for him to express such excitement even though Superman belongs to a different DC franchise now. Let Ayer express his enthusiasm for James Gunn’s next DC movie and also let those who hope to see Ayer’s cut of Suicide Squad have their wish fulfilled.

On July 11, 2025, Superman will soar into cinemas, and although Creature Commandos marked the initial step for the DC Universe, according to Gunn and DC Studios head Peter Safran, this film is viewed as the “genuine commencement” of this universe. David Ayer’s newest production, The Beekeeper, can be streamed with a subscription to Amazon Prime Video.
