2024 TV lineup brought joy to comedy enthusiasts with David Alan Grier making a comeback on network TV, joining the cast of NBC’s “St. Denis Medical” as Dr. Ron. The sitcom has been renewed for a second season, ensuring more of Grier, Allison Tolman, and their co-stars. However, in 2025, Grier will be seen on an entirely different show – CBS’ “Elsbeth”. This series is known for attracting high-profile guest stars who portray killers.
Following the announcement of Grier being cast in Elsbeth, it reminded me of my previous discussions with the co-creators and main actress Allison Tolman of St. Denis Medical. Reflecting upon their thoughts, I must admit, it heightens my anticipation to watch him on CBS’ crime drama/comedy series.
How David Alan Grier Has Been Crushing On St. Denis Medical
I recently chatted with the cast and executive producers of “St. Denis Medical” at SCAD TVfest in Atlanta. The show was nominated for Critics Choice Awards early in its first season, although it didn’t take home either trophy. I also had a conversation with creators Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer about David Alan Grier portraying Dr. Ron and Allison Tolman as Nurse Alex. On the red carpet at TVfest, Ledgin shared some insights:
As a cinephile, let me express my thoughts on this cinematic gem. The chemistry between the leads is off the charts, escalating to heights that surpassed even what was written in the script. From the outset, it was clear that these characters were intended to have a unique dynamic. However, instead of falling into the predictable trap of sexual tension, we opted for something refreshingly different. In essence, we chose not to play into the usual expectations, making this film a breath of fresh air in today’s cinema landscape.
The relationship between Ron and Alex on St. Denis Medical is my favorite so far, according to me, but contrary to popular belief, it’s not because of any romantic tension. It was expected that the comedy legend from In Living Color could deliver laughter after a career filled with stand-up, sketch comedy TV (except for SNL), and even a talking live-action clock in ABC’s Beauty and the Beast. However, it has been a pleasure to witness him acting alongside Tolman. Ledgin further stated:
In essence, this is an unconventional mentorship where two individuals share a bond despite differing perspectives on life. It seems that Ron admires Alex greatly, recognizing potential pitfalls he experienced, and striving to guide her to avoid similar missteps. [laughs] This relationship offers plenty of intrigue and enjoyment as we observe their dynamic unfold.
As a devoted Fargo enthusiast, I had the chance to attend the SCAD TVfest red carpet and couldn’t help but express my admiration for Allison Tolman’s co-star. He possesses an impressive fanbase that spans far and wide, and it’s evident he’s been gracing our screens for years.
Intriguingly, the dynamic between my character, Alex, and David Alan Grier’s Dr. Ron, differs significantly from the one I share with Wendi McLendon-Covey’s Joyce. Each relationship adds a unique layer to the intricate tapestry of Fargo’s storyline, making it an unforgettable journey for us viewers.
There’s a boundary that Alex can’t quite cross when it comes to her superior, Joyce, who is her boss. Despite feeling the urge to express frustration towards Joyce as she does with Ron, saying something like ‘You’re so annoying and wrong,’ isn’t an option for her. This dynamic adds an interesting twist to their interactions. It’s intriguing to watch Alex subtly challenge Joyce by saying things like, ‘You know, you have your own unique brand of idiocy,’ or ‘You make some questionable decisions,’ while holding back from voicing more direct criticism. [laughs] It’s amusing to see her hold back on expressing her true feelings about many topics.
As a film enthusiast, let me tell you, if you haven’t dived into the world of “St. Denis Medical” yet, I can’t emphasize enough how it’s worth another look, especially the initial episodes which you can access with a Peacock subscription. And don’t forget to tune in on NBC every Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET for the latest episodes! While David Alan Grier is undeniably one of the standout aspects of this freshman sitcom, the acclaim he’s been receiving from the “St. Denis” crew definitely intensifies my excitement for his upcoming character, “Elsbeth”.
How He’ll (Literally) Be Killing It On Elsbeth
By now, in Season 2, Elsbeth is so well-known for her knack of choosing celebrities as murder suspects that I found it unexpected when Ioan Gruffudd’s character in the Valentine’s Day episode turned out not to be a murderer, but simply a charming firefighter and musician instead.
According to Variety’s report on David Alan Grier’s episode, it appears that his character, Arthur Greene Jr., might be involved in some questionable activities rather than courting Carrie Preston’s leading lady romantically. Arthur is portrayed as the proprietor of a high-end mortuary catering to the wealthy and influential. The episode’s plotline suggests:
Arthur values discretion above all else; thus, when his relative with a penchant for uncovering secrets hinted at revealing the truth behind a well-known author’s flawed funeral, Arthur took whatever steps were necessary to ensure the secret remained hidden.
Without a doubt, the description doesn’t explicitly state that Grier’s character will be the one who commits murder in his Elsbeth episode. However, it seems likely that Arthur will commit some form of homicide during the cold open. The exact air date for this episode on CBS is yet to be announced, but fans can expect new episodes every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET. If you have a Paramount+ subscription, you’ll be able to stream each episode the following day.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that Mary Louise Parker, famously known from ‘Weeds’, is set to appear in an upcoming episode! On another note, Matthew Broderick has been announced as the second star for this season of ‘The Producers’. Following Nathan Lane’s remarkable performance as the premiere killer, Broderick is poised to leave his mark.
