As a long-time admirer of Kevin Costner’s work, I have to say that his unwavering dedication to the Horizon saga is nothing short of inspiring. This man, who came up with this idea back in 1988 and invested a substantial portion of his own wealth into it, clearly sees something special in this project.
The Kevin Costner-led “Horizon” series has experienced quite a journey since the debut of “Chapter One” in June. The initial installment didn’t perform well, and the scheduled release date for “Chapter 2” was pushed back from August 2024. Given these circumstances, some might be questioning the future prospects of this emerging franchise. In light of this uncertainty, Costner himself is becoming more candid about the possibility of “Chapter 3.
Earlier, Kevin Costner provided updates on Chapters 3 and 4, mentioning that filming for Chapter 3 had already begun and his intention to shoot both the third and fourth parts together during spring. However, at the Venice International Film Festival premiere of Horizon 2, Costner (through Entertainment Weekly) expressed a heightened sense of necessity in completing the sequel:
I need to act quickly and prevent the rock from rolling back downhill. I’ve got to get my hands on it once more and start pushing it upwards. It’s a task that I can’t abandon, I’ll find a way to complete it. Even though I’m unsure how I’ll do it right now, I’m determined to succeed.
According to EW, Kevin Costner appeared deeply moved while expressing his feelings about the project, a sentiment that makes sense considering it’s been a long-cherished endeavor of his. As the star of Yellowstone, Costner conceived this idea way back in 1988 and is said to have invested $38 million of his personal funds into the four-part series. Given his strong attachment to this project, he has been vigilant about its progress. In fact, he didn’t want Chapter One to be released straight to streaming platforms, preferring instead for audiences to experience the Western genre on the big screen.
In Venice, the star of Field of Dreams commented that while Chapter One underperformed at the box office during its opening weekend, he remained unfazed by the poor ticket sales. This is because he recognizes that many renowned films initially struggled at the box office. Consequently, he was determined to proceed with his strategy of releasing the Horizon movies every five to six months. However, this plan was altered when the release date for Horizon: Chapter Two was adjusted – a move that the actor attributes to Warner Bros.’ decision-making process.
Kevin Costner hypothesized that the delay in releasing Chapter Two could be attributed to the impressive global box office earnings of $36.1 million for Chapter One, which was made on a budget of $50 million. Additionally, it’s worth noting that the Western film didn’t resonate well with critics, who described it as an “all-out cinematic experience” or an “incoherent disaster.” Despite some challenges along the way, Costner appears to be persevering in his determination to bring the series to the big screen.
At times, when things seem difficult or unattainable, an instinct arises in me to step back. Yet, paradoxically, when something proves challenging, it triggers a stronger urge within me. This is particularly true for my own mental pursuits. I find comfort in the thought that what I’m struggling with is a timeless tale or form of entertainment. Therefore, when I experience rejection, I share similar feelings as others. However, upon emerging from my disappointment, my desire to succeed only intensifies, fueling my persistence. This sums up my approach.
It seems clear that the future of Horizon: Chapter 3 is currently up in the air. Nevertheless, Kevin Costner’s recent statements suggest determination and a strong intention to complete this project he initiated. Whether he can successfully carry out this plan alongside Warner Bros. remains to be seen.
