The extensive cast announcement during last week’s Marvel livestream for Avengers: Doomsday, which seemed to feature every actor in Hollywood, was quite impressive. However, there were several notable absences among the actors set to appear in the upcoming Marvel film, such as Halle Berry, a former member of the X-Men team.
The most unexpected revelations in the Avengers: Doomsday unveiling were when some actors from the initial X-Men series found their names engraved on the seat backs. To our amazement, not only did we see Kelsey Grammer and Patrick Stewart (who had already made brief appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), but also Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden. Noticeably missing from this list was former Storm actress Halle Berry. Recently, she was asked by Black Girl Nerds if there might still be a chance for her name to appear on a chair. Keep waiting! Not gonna be there! [laughs] It’s not gonna be there.
Although Avengers: Doomsday is currently underway in production, it’s possible that the cast members announced during the livestream might not be all who will appear in the film. It’s quite likely that there are still a few surprises being held back from public knowledge. Given that several X-Men actors are returning, many viewers (myself included while live blogging the event), eagerly anticipated seeing Berry’s name added to the list. However, this did not happen.
As a film critic, I must say, Halle Berry leaves little room for speculation in her responses. Unlike many actors who dance around questions to dodge potential truths, Berry’s answers are as clear as a crystal ball. There’s not much wriggle-room left for interpretation in her statements.
Additionally, when you hear how she responds to the question, it sounds like she’s feeling a mix of disappointment and acceptance, as though her name might not appear in their lineup. It’s intriguing to speculate if maybe discussions took place between her and Marvel Studios, but they were unable to reach an agreement.
It’s possible that Halle Berry could join her X-Men co-stars in Avengers: Doomsday. Her recent responses about the movie might be misleading – she may not have confirmed her casting, even if it’s true, or she could be following Andrew Garfield’s example and deliberately misrepresenting her involvement. However, if fans continue to express their desire for Storm’s return, directors Joe and Anthony Russo might adjust the storyline to include Berry. So while there are no confirmed plans yet, there’s still a chance things could change.
Should Halle Berry not feature in Avengers: Doomsday, it’s bound to feel like something’s missing from the movie. Regardless of how the X-Men are incorporated, it’s tough not to anticipate her absence. But there’s always Avengers: Secret Wars, a film that will undoubtedly strive to surpass Doomsday. Perhaps Halle Berry could be its hidden strength.
