After Netflix Axed That ‘90s Show, It Just Canceled Yet Another Two-Season Show

As a dedicated fan who’s been through the highs and lows of streaming shows, I must say, this latest turn of events with Unstable is a real kick in the teeth. I’ve grown fond of the eccentric tech magnate Ellis Dragon and his complicated relationship with his son, Jackson, portrayed brilliantly by Rob Lowe and his talented offspring.

Fans of Netflix appreciate top-tier shows, but there have been criticisms regarding certain aspects of one of the premier streaming services. Notably, Netflix is recognized for its quick decisions to cancel programs. Among their original series, some have ended after just a single season, while others run for two. One such production that fits into the latter group was recently canceled: That ’90s Show. Interestingly, another show running for two seasons has now been terminated by Netflix. This latest announcement comes only about a week following the first one.

2024 marks the end of the line for the workplace comedy “Unstable,” co-created and starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe. According to Deadline, the team behind the series has been informed that there will be no third season. Although a specific reason for this content-related decision hasn’t been disclosed, it’s suggested that Netflix renews shows based on viewership compared to costs. Furthermore, the second season of “Unstable” didn’t make it onto Netflix’s Top 10 streaming list.

Although it might not be the preferred update for fans of the series, there’s a sliver of optimism to consider. Reports indicate that the show’s producers are actively trying to sell the production to other TV broadcasters at the moment. In fact, this approach has proven successful for certain Netflix productions such as the One Day at a Time reboot and the romantic comedy series Uncoupled. However, it is important to note that Uncoupled was canceled once more after Showtime gave it the green light for another season.

In 2023, the series Unstable introduces us to Ellis Dragon (played by Rob Lowe), an unconventional tech mogul, who plunges into despair after the loss of his wife. As colleagues express concern for his mental health and the company’s stability, Ellis’ son, Jackson (John Owen), is persuaded to join the firm. Their contrasting personalities lead to occasional disagreements, but they also share a common bond through their shared grief. The ensemble cast includes Sian Clifford, Rachel Marsh, Emma Pilar Ferreira, and Aaron Branch.

In a sense, the show became a cherished endeavor for Rob Lowe, as he appreciated the chance to collaborate with his son. During an interview with TopMob, Rob commended John Owen’s acting abilities, remarking that “he can’t portray an untruthful instant.” Additionally, Rob offered a light-hearted perspective on filming nude scenes for the comedy series, jokingly commenting that his body has a sense of humor.

Meanwhile, the creators of Unstable and That ‘90s Show are both searching for new broadcast platforms since their shows have been cancelled. Kurtwood Smith, who stars in and produces That ‘70s Show spin-off, confirmed this when the cancellation news was announced. At present, there’s no latest information regarding the fate of either show; however, Deadline suggests that a traditional network might be where they land if picked up again. Similarly, it is said that the same would likely apply for The Lowe’s show.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m currently enjoying “Unstable” on Netflix, and I’m keeping my eyes peeled for more exciting titles, whether they’re streaming exclusives or not, to add to my gaming list next!
