As a long-time fan, I must confess that my thoughts about “Grimm,” the NBC supernatural drama that ran for six seasons, have taken a backseat recently. The show, which revolved around a Portland detective with an uncanny ability to see monsters hidden among us, left its mark when it was abruptly canceled in 2016. Yet, I found myself drawn back to it when I learned that a reboot is on the horizon.

However, a recent statement from one of the original cast members has me even more intrigued. I can hardly wait to see what fresh tales of hidden worlds and supernatural creatures await us in this exciting new chapter!

Bitsie Tulloch played Juliette Silverton — the girlfriend of the series’ main character, David Burkhardt (played by David Giuntoli). This was years she would go on to portray Lois Lane in the Arrowverse. Tulloch posted to Instagram after the news that a new Grimm movie was in development for Peacock. Grimm fans – good news!! Spinoff in the works!

It’s become quite common to hear the term “reboot” thrown around, often to the point where its original meaning has been diluted. Essentially, it’s used to describe a fresh approach to an intellectual property (IP) that was previously considered “finished.” This could mean a completely new storyline unrelated to the previous one, or even a continuation set in the same universe with new characters. In essence, a reboot is a revamping of a property, offering a fresh perspective while possibly maintaining some elements of the original.

To clarify, when I say “spinoff,” I’m referring to a narrative that shares a connection with a previous story. It can be set during the same time as the original series or even serve as a sequel, where characters from the initial show take on leading roles in a new and exciting continuation.

If the upcoming movie is a spin-off, there’s a good chance some familiar faces from the original series will make an appearance. However, their presence might not be essential if the film is intended as a reboot, especially if the new movie is set in a world where the storyline of the original series has already unfolded.

It turns out that NBC once contemplated a spinoff of the Grimm series, a few years back. David Giuntoli was on board with it, but the project ultimately didn’t move forward. Whether this old idea, which centered around a new female Grimm character, has any connection to the current concept remains uncertain.

More recently, Bitsie Tulloch hasn’t ventured too far from the Grimm fanbase. In fact, a few years ago, she co-hosted a Grimm rewatch podcast with two other cast members. Given her response to the news and referring to it as a spinoff, it seems she has some insight into what’s happening with this upcoming film. If she is involved, then the movie might be more of a spinoff than a reboot.

I don’t have a preference between the two concepts, but both versions of Grimm hold great promise. I’m looking forward to seeing which one materializes. Plus, now that the show has popped back into my mind, I plan on utilizing my Peacock subscription to watch it again.
